I am fed up with pan lubing black powder bullets and want to try my home made 50:50 beeswax/olive oil lube in my RCBS Lubrisizer. Before I go ahead and maybe jam it up I would like to ask:
1. What's the best way of cleaning out the old smokeless powder lube?
2. can I just pour in the melted lube, wait for it to set and replace the piston?

Re: Lubrisizer questions
I have only done it with my RCBS lubrisizer twice but I just dig it all out using a popsicle stick and a rubber tiped dental pick. WHAT A PAIN !!!
I have read that you can put the hole unit in a large pan of water and bring it up to a boil, the lube melts and floats to the top and hardens when cool. Supposed to get it spanking clean. skim off the lube after it is cool, heat it back up and remove the unit, blow off and let dry and lightly lube bare metal parts and refill with the new lube.
Sounds like more trouble than the popsicle stick to me!

Re: Lubrisizer questions
I like the boiling melt system but I can see the metal corroding like crazy. I recently switched to SPG from the old RCBS stuff and boy what a pain doing the scrap, melt, pick thing. Still have a bit of the RCBS lube coming out.
Sincerely,

Re: Lubrisizer questions
I have switched back and forth between Thompson's Blue Angel and SPG . When ever I switch over I turn the heater on and run whatever is in there out until the other starts coming thru .
Now I have three lubesizers . One stays in the drawer and the other two are setup one for Blue Angel and the other for SPG

Re: Lubrisizer questions
I read one time that you can pull the piston out and then put the sizer in a pan in the oven and melt the old lube out of it. Never tried it, but I figure it could work.

Re: Lubrisizer questions
-- Disassembled the Lubrisizer.
-- Hang upside down over a pan.
-- Heat w/ a propane torch or a heat gun to melt lube & let it run into the pan. Keep the torch & heat gun moving. The mertal soon heats up & will quickly transfer the heat.
I've done this sequence more than once. & it will work every time -- gets it really clean. Just need to take your time & get it nice hot & keep it hot for awhile. After the lube stops running & oozing out, it will be clean, but I keep the heat on for a few more minutes just to be positive.
There really is no easy/ no mess way to clean out one.
A friend uses the boiling water routine & claims that metal becomes so hot that it "flash dries” upon removal from the water bath & there is no rust.

The most important aspect of this signature line is that you don't realize it doesn't say anything significant until you are just about done reading it & then it is too late to stop reading it....

Re: Lubrisizer questions
I scrape mine out when switching from Alox to SPG. Never get it all out, but... I just lube some pistol bullets that can be loaded with either black or smokeless. I only change lubes in the wintertime, when a softer lube won't adversely affect my smokeless pistol loads. Usually running with one or the other within 50 rounds or so. Ain't a problem in my mind... maybe I need to... wait, I have another lubri-sizer; all I have to do is set it up! Insert sound of palm slapping forehead!

I use a heat gun. I use my heat shrink gun we used for shrink tubing, like a hair dryer but commercial & hotter.
Hair dryer works also, not a continous duty product however so it may not last.
