OT: CC permit delima... Res or Non-res

Post by mklwhite »

I'm going thinking about throwing down on a concealed carry permit, but here is the shakedown.

I'm in Arkansas. To get the permit $144 the first time (and $55 every 5 years to renew). To take the "training" about $80 total: $224. About 30 states honor it's permit.

To get a Florida Non-Res permit is $117 (I miss typed 177) for seven years and renew at $107 (IIRC). 29 states will honor the Non-res permit.

Money, as in all things, is an issue... but I'm kind of on the fence to a degree. I'm leaning toward the Florida one for price, but am I overlooking anything? What do you think?

$47.00 difference. I bet you've spent more than that in worse places.

Would you have to make a trip to Florida "just" to obtain the license?
That would surely eat up $47.00 in a heart beat.

$47.00 wont buy a tank of gas in most cars.

Just a couple of thoughts to consider.

I'd go with my home state. That's what I did. TX-TX.

Sorry, I miss typed. The Florida permit is $117. For a $107 difference than the home state permit.

Plus "5-73-319. Transfer of a license to Arkansas." Says

(a) Any person who becomes a resident of Arkansas who has a valid license to carry a concealed handgun issued by a reciprocal state may apply to transfer his or her license to Arkansas by submitting the following to the Department of Arkansas State Police:

(1) The person's current reciprocal state license;

(2) Two (2) properly completed fingerprint cards;

(3) A nonrefundable license fee of thirty-five dollars ($35.00);

(4) Any fee charged by a state or federal agency for a criminal history check; and

(5) A digital photograph of the person or a release authorization to obtain a digital photograph of the person from another source.

(b) After July 31, 2007, the newly transferred license is valid for a period of five (5) years from the date of issuance and binds the holder to all Arkansas laws and regulations regarding the carrying of the concealed handgun.

Now I'm not sure how that would work with me (as I am an Arkansas citizen anyway) but I may be able to transfer to the Arkansas permit (before time to renew) for the $35 transfer fee plus a background fee of $20 and a fingerprint fee of $24. Which would get me in at a $79 renewal for 5 years.

You know, I've got a VA CHP and I've not yet gotten a non-resident permit (there's NH for $25 or some such). I don't know whether a resident using the non-resident permit from another state is gonna fly. An interesting approach to be sure.
Sincerely,

Here in Fla. there is a 3 day wait for purchased firearms in some counties... unless you have a CCW permit. If you have the permit there's no wait, ever. Check you state to see if that might be an issue. Here you have to have training as well but it can be a hunter safety course or even a DD214 to show that you have had firearms training.

I was planning on using my Hunters Education Course as my training for the Florida permit.

I would tend to agree with Hobie. If you are a resident, I think they'll expect a resident permit.
You may eventually win in court, but that will cost a lot more than the fifty bucks you'll save now.
I think we have all outsmarted ourselves at one time or another.

I always told my kids that people talk about "valuable learning experiences". But as I see it there are valuable learning experiences and there are expensive lessons.
One needs to maximize the valuable learning experiences and minimize the expensive lessons.

Ten years from now you won't miss the money for the Arkansas permit, but if you got into a bind and were charged with unlawful use of a weapon...
Well that would be an expensive lesson.

If I had a permit from my home state available to me, then thats what I would get. Being from Illinois, that is not an option for me, so the Florida permit is all I can do. Makes me angry that I can get a NR permit from Florida that is honored by 28-29 states, but is worthless here in my home state.

Prezactly why I have applied for the Utah permit.
The ONLY option we have is a non-resident permit.
