Important Job In Mozambique

Post by JimT »

In this photo I am waiting my turn to do an important job:

We had no running water. Our toilet was a hole in the ground behind the bamboo fence on the left of the photo. The little sign on the corner of the fence reads, "IN USE".

I was waiting my turn when my wife took the photo.

I noticed you had the proper paper work all ready for the job too.

You always have the paperwork with you. Wherever you go. Some of the nicer restaurants in Pemba are known by the fact that you do not have to take your own toilet paper.

That is not a joke. :o

You quickly learn that when you leave the base, take some with you.

That's actually not too bad, I've been places where didn't even have a hole to do it in. :) Nice rock to hide behind in case of emergency too. Those are nice Papayas just outside the outhouse. I keep a roll of TP in a ziplock bag in my truck, and another ziplock TP in my boat safety gear bag, just as important as the first aid kit.

We ate the papaya's fresh off the trees. EXCELLENT! Ruined me for the 'store-bought' ones.

I see you guys had the luxury suite. Our first place in Brazil when Sheri and I first went down had a living/dining room, kitchen and bedroom. The "shower" was a small square with some planks to stand on and surrounded by four foot high black plastic stretched around fence posts. The privy was the same arrangement as the shower only with a hole in the ground in the middle and further towards the back of the lot. That fancy bamboo screen would have been nice - especially at shower time. We'd usually shower after 7:00 p.m. - after it got dark enough for a reasonable amount of privacy.

Oh yeah, no job is finished until the paperwork is done. :D And leaves are a poor substitute. And just because it's a fuzzy, soft leaf doesn't mean that it's good to use in place of TP. In fact, it probably ISN'T a good substitute. Corncobs leave a lot to be desired as well...
