OT-Milestones

Post by Otto »

Looking at jnyork's post about his time in service made me realize something. I start college next Monday, August 25. That is exactly 20 years after I enlisted into the Navy, 1988 AUG 25. I also realized that, if I had stayed in, I would be able to retire in 5 stinkin' days. Now I have to wait 'til I'm 60, another 20 years.

If you survived all those years in uniform.

I retired after 23 years of service...but I buried more than a few friends, too.

Do what makes you happy. If'n it's service to our country that's great. If'n it's something else, that's all good too.

Do what you love and you'll never have to "work" a day in your life.

I do enjoy the military, but it can be awfully frustrating, especially in a reserve component.

I hated self-serving superiors.
I hated half-witted subordinates.
I hate sand (Hell, I won't even go to the beach!).
I hated pee-poor compensation, lack of respect from clueless Americans, contempt from foreign nationals (who's bacon we were pulling out of the fire), and a supply system that gave me pipe fittings (but no PIPE!) when I was attempting to build an airbase out of nothing but a patch of sand.

I hated that my service cost me two marriages. And I hate that my service put me 23 years behind my classmates in getting a mortgage paid-off.

And I wouldn't trade a moment of my service for anything in the world.

I told anyone that would listen, for three full years, that I was done, I've had it , I'm getting out, I don't care anymore, screw this stuff.

I re-enlisted two days before my ETS.

Maybe I'm just one of those people that needs something to bitch about.
