New levergun for wife?

Post by KT-45 »

My wife's CAS rifle is a Winchester 94 Trapper in .357 and she's unhappy with it 'cause:

1 - it doesn't hold enough in the magazine for a standard CAS stage.
2 - it doesn't feed reliably regardless of the bullet type/OAL I reload for her.
3 - the saddle ring occasionally hits the cross-bolt safety and engages it.

A couple of 'smiths have looked at it and it's better on the feeding but still not 100%.

I'm not much of a Marlin fan. I'm considering either a Puma or something in the 1866-1873 arena for a replacement for the trapper.

Suggestions? (I'd like it to be a .357 since her sixguns are chambered for that cartridge.)

Ask Nate Kiowa Jones (Steve Young) and get what he recommends. Have HIM do the race ready work on it. Find out just how much your wife loves you when you sell that rare Winchester for enough to pay for the new rifle.

Are you serious? I've never owned a "valuable" gun in my life.

What's a Trapper in .357 worth, anyway?

I just bought an AE Ranger Trapper in 357 for $400. Thought it was a good deal.
Kind regards,

Well, I was going to say Marlin CAS in 38 then you said you don't like Marlins... don't know why. I think they are the very best you can get for CAS - hands down.

A tuned Puma will be very nice though - but I can cycle and shoot my Marlin Cowboy faster.

And as to the value of your Winchester - just check gunbroker and you'll see what they are selling for...

If she's interested in CAS, and is frustrated with the '94, a slicked up '92 by Nate will certainly make her happy! I've offered to buy my wife a '73, but she still loves her '92 Rossi, and feels its great. (But the callous, selfish part of me, sez... Nate has a pair of my pistols to work on... you figure it out!)

Nice looking rifle. However it still has the 16" tube. I suspect it won't hold the minimum 10 rounds that she's looking for.

Don't feel bad, I read it correctly the first time and immediately wondered what kind of trade was being offered... :?

+1

With a 20-inch tube it should hold the 10 rounds your wife wants. You won't regret it! :D

I read it right when I first read it (New Levergun For Wife?) but thought he was talking about a trade. I was gonna tell him it sounded good to me and to go for it!

I really don't give a hoot about speed. I won my class (49er) at the SASS club's annual match earlier this month shooting an unmodified 1860 Henry (Uberti) in .45 Colt...I won the "pistol caliber levergun" long-range side match with the Henry too!

The club where the wife and I shoot puts a premium on accuracy (and a penalty on light handloads).

For the wife's levergun we're looking for function, capacity, and pretty (pretty much in that order).

The only way it would be a good trade would be if she came with her own boat and motor.

I think she'll find a '92 is slicker than a '94 anyway and after Steve works it over it'll be like melted butter.

Every one who knows me knows that I dearly love Marlin Model 39's, Model 336's and Model 1895's. They also know that I positively detest Marlin Model 1894's. We discussed the Marlin Jam Syndrome, IIRC

I believe we talked about this the last time I called, but I'll say it again. In pistol caliber leverguns, you can't beat a Rossi M-92 Saddle Ring Carbine without spending a butt-load of money.

Doc -

Yeah, my CAS long-range levergun is a Marlin (1895CB) in .45-70...the only Marlin I own. I see a lot of malfunctions with the 1894s at the club.

The Rossi/Puma option still looks like the best one for the Lovely and Talented Miss Randi. I just figured I'd ask and see if there was an option out there I was unaware of.

I may trade-off her Trapper for a Puma. Trouble is, nobody around here has them on the shelf and I got mildly screwed on my last on-line trade.

(OT: we just got done with another little theater production...Steel Magnolias. I did sound and voice-overs; Randi played Ouiser)

"New levergun for wife?"

Is that a trade offer? Don't need another wife, but a new levergun would be nice. I'll check with my wife to see if she's willing.
