3 Marlin leverguns at the range today... pics

Post by O.S.O.K. »

Took three of my Marlins out to the range today - needed to check the sights on all three. Marlin Texan 30-30, 336RC 35 Rem and 336RC .356 Win (rechamber).

Here are the targets:

Texan - 50 yards (can't complain about this! - front sight was adjusted and is now perfect and it shoots to point of aim with rear sight in the second notch):
Image

100 yards: (the font bead coverd the whole target! I think I pulled the first shot over to the left...)

336RC .356 Win: (this is still shooting too high so I've got the next tallest front sight on order - I adjusted the windage and shot another similar group after taking this pictue that was centered) - also, I was having some issues that I'll detail below...
Image

336RC .35 Rem: (Iron sights at 100 yards - and the bead covered the entire target circle... so I'm very pleased)

The Texan and .356 Win both had new front sights on them - the Texan's is perfect and the .356 Win is getting a new taller one (.530" - same as what the Texan needed) and I just took the scope off of the .35 Rem - it was throwing flyers with no apparent cause - now with the irons it isn't... so I'm strongly suspecting the scope is having issues - will send it back to Burris for a check.

The .356 Win Nonneman conversion is shooting very well, but there was an ignition problem - every 4th shot or so would go "click" and then after waiting, I'd take the round out and see a light strike. It would go on the next hit... but this did nothing to help my shooting and is the primary cause for the 3" groups at 100 yards - I could tell that when 3 in a row ignited properly, the groups (at 50 yards) were very tight. So, when I got home, I took the bolt out and completely disassembled. I polished the firing pin and the channel and while inspecting the very end where the firing pin nose goes through, I found a little burr that came off when I ran a punch through the hole - bingo - that has to be the cause for this. The pin feels much better now - moves in its channel better.

I have to admit that I really enjoy messing around with these lever guns. :)

Can't wait to get them out deer hunting this fall.

Good shooting OSOK. I have a new Williams receiver sight coming next week for my 71. I will get it on and do some sighting in next weekend. Maybe I can get one of those East Texas deer :D .

Good shooting - it looks like those rifles will be ready to go in no time.

Use a bigger target and that won't happen...

Good job dude!

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing - bigger target would eliminate that - - on the other hand, I was the joker behind the rifle.... squinting when I should have had both eyes open at the shot...

Right now the 35 Rem is the pick but we'll see how the .356 performs with its new bolt/firing pin and higher front sight.... those misfires were really annoying.

I have to say I really like the .356 - it bucks a bit but that pad really takes the spit out of the recoil. :)

There are two things you can do besides larger targets . The easiest is to install a SCOPE

The second is to use the old 6 o'clock hold on the bull !

Not saying that is the only way but those two have worked for me in the past !

Yeah, I;ve tried the 6 o'clock - and that's what I use for my pistol shooting. But it seems to give me inconsistent results with my leverguns and I really prefer the "on" hold with the bead covering the spot you want the bullet to land. Just seems natural to me.

For my Texan 30-30, the sights are set to hit spot on, and I know that a deer is quite a bit different than a small black circle... to sight on.

For the .356, a slightly taller sight is cheap, easy to install and will give me some more range of adjustment - like for 200 grain loads which shoot higher than the 220's... and are probable better for deer sized game. I've got some loaded to 2400 fps and they seemed to shoot well enough - just really high.

And I'm not "anti scope" as I use them on all of my hunting bolt guns - but I really prefer my levers to be iron sighted as they are intended for shorter ranges and quick shooting. Ever lost a running deer in your scope? Yeah, me too.

Typically I don't shoot at running deer unless they're wounded !

Think I have shot two running deer in my life and both times it was after I had hit them once already !

Yep, that's what I'm talking about. And I hate not being able to follow up when needed....
