I need your help guys!!!!!

Post by Rifleman336 »

It is with great regret that I find my self in a position were I am going to have to get rid of major portion of the battery. Due to medical reasons I have to declare bankruptcy and I won't be able to keep everything I currently own.   The disposition of everything has been decided, except for two rifles.

I am going to keep two revolvers (.357's), a single shot shotgun, and a rifle.

I need help in deciding which rifle to keep. I have until Monday to figure out whether to keep my Marlin 336 in .30-30 (20 inch bbl) or a Marlin 1894C (guide gun, 16 inch bbl).

Being I live in Ohio ( a shotgun only state) I can't use it for deer.

I'll be using the gun for home defense, or to hunt other quarry.

I am mulling over the the advantages and disadvantages of each. I like the .357 for the commonality of ammo. The .30-30 has more energy at extended ranges and with have more penitration under certain circumstances. At this point I need you guys to weight in, I value your opnions on this board and I thank you in advance.

This is a truly sad story, if you continue to reside in Ohio; keep the .357.
If a move is in your future, keep the .30-.30.
Best of luck,
I will make smoke for you.

Keep the one that has the most meaning and memories. Best wishes on your medical and financial problems.

To answer your question, I would keep the Appalachian Assault Rifle.(336) :)

Sorry to hear this. I'd keep the 1894. Ammunition commonality/exchangability becomes even more important when economic times are tough... :(

Rifleman 336,

I've been where you are. In my case all my guns except those I was allowed to keep by law were signed over to my attorney in lieu of payment. We didn't even have cash money to pay him. When we finished paying him off we got the guns back. At that time in AZ that was legal. I don't know about now in Ohio.

Do you have any friends you can sell them to who will give you the option of buying them back?
Just an idea.

I suspect given your situation I'd lean towards the 1894C just because of the commonality of ammo.

I'm sorry to hear of your troubles, but hang in there. Things change.

I'd keep the .357 - especially since money is an issue. .357 is so much cheaper to shoot & reload for. Plus all the reasons above.

Plus, after one more season here in Indiana to use as "proof", I'm going to try to help folks in Ohio get their Regs changed to match Indiana when it comes to using Pistol Caliber Rifles.

If it were me, I'd let the 30-30 go. It will be easier to replace when things get better for you.

Keep the 1894 in 357. Buy only one ammo. Besides, 357 out of a rifle approximates 30-30 oomph.

336s in 30-30 are plentiful.

Prayers for improvement of your situation.

Yeah, I'd hold on to the 94. I's better for what you want/need the rifle for at this time. 30-30's are plentiful.

Hope things improve soon.

i would keep the .357. I am sorry for the troubles. Common ammo, self defense, and deer type game. Blessings. Prayers up.

I agree that the 357 would be the one to keep.

I also pray for your situation to improve. Hang in there.

I would keep the 357 given your situation. I am a huge fan of 30-30 but the world is full of 336's.

I'm going to agree with the others. Keep the 357m. I'm hoping that Ohio goes the way of Indiana and allows pistol cartridge carbines for Deer hunting.

So very sorry to hear of your situation. Hope things improve for you!!

Sorry for your troubles, its hard when you gotta cut back on stuff you love.
If either of them holds sentimental value, keep that one.
If running costs are going to be an issue and you can keep all your shots inside about 100 yards go the 357, same as your handgun. If your going to want to reach out and touch stuff at 150-200 yards you may want to consider keeping the 30-30.
As far as home defence goes, a feral human that get hit with a 357 handgun or rifle or a 30-30 rifle is dead meat, so no consideration needs to be given on that issue.
One other thing is, if your problem is medical, will recoil be an issue?

No recoil will not be a problem at all. But what I'll be allowed to justifyably keep is another. All the court would have to do is look at all the BATFE 4474 forms that I've filled out over the years and that could lead to more trouble than I want during a proceeding. And speaking from prior experiance, THEY WILL MAKE IT PART OF COURT RECORD, WHAT FIREARMS ONE OWNS. Their concidered physical liqufiable assets. I can justify the revolvers as ones for Ohio concealed carry. the full size for inside the home, the 12 Ga singleshot is for legal hunting and a lever gun is for legal hunting of game other than deer.

The guns that are going to hurt the most when I send them away are a stainless COLT 1991A1 that I picked up for $500 that I carried as a armed gaurd. Theirs no way I could get it for that price again. A S&W 3'bbl, Model 36-1 that was my first back up gun that was picked up for $200 about 7 years ago they now go for $400 and S&W is making them under their must have classic sereis. A minty Mode 10-5 taper barrel that I bought 2 years ago. A $150 gun now going for $400. They don't make them like that any more ya' know? A Remington 870 POLICE magnum, that was reconditioned by the factory for $600 and cost $1000 new. Then of course I'm breaking up the dynamic duo of the leverguns.

These are the ones that will hurt the most   .

Well I got till Monday the 18th to figure out who's taking the long car ride never to come back.
