Receiver sight Question
As some of ya'll know I recently bought a Browning 71. I'm thinking of installing a receiver sight on it, already drilled and trapped. My question is do I go with a Lyman 66WB or a Williams FP71/FP71TK ? With is better? Is one stronger then the other? With one do you think is best and why.

Re: Receiver sight Question
Since it is a Browning I'd go with an FP-71. #1, I like the quality of the current Williams better than the current Lyman. (if you have a vintage steel Lyman, dat's da bomb) #2, the Williams is cleaner and always works. #3 you don't need knobs for other people to mess with when handling your gun or for you to mess with (depending on your temperament). Zero it and forget it.
If it was an ORIGINAL Winchester I'd hold out for a vintage Lyman or Redfield.

Ricky,
I just answered that question in this thread:

Re: Receiver sight Question
I agree with Hobie with one caveat: The Lyman is elevation adjustable with the push of a button and the FP requires loosening a screw and adjusting a screw.
Kind regards,

Re: Receiver sight Question
Ricky,
I like Hobie's response. I use the Williams sights on mine for the reasons stated but they are a pain for elevation adjustment but that is a once done its done type thing. Good luck in your choice.

Which is why I prefer the Williams ESPECIALLY if ANYONE else will be handling the gun for ANY reason.Tycer wrote:I agree with Hobie with one caveat: The Lyman is elevation adjustable with the push of a button and the FP requires loosening a screw and adjusting a screw.

Re: Receiver sight Question
Well I have new Lymans , old Lymans , Wiliams FP's with target knobs and an old Redfield and I like them all !
Personally for a hunting only rifle I think I like the Lyman just a bit better !
For my three lever silhouette rifles I have them set up with Williams FP's with target knobs ! Also have a FP on my old 36SC which doesn't have target knobs and it works quite nicely as well !

Re: Receiver sight Question
Old Lymans are hard to beat, but I have had two of the newer ones that were wobbly even when tightened. This is unacceptable to me. You could not give me a newer Lyman today. I like the old and new Williams sights. The older ones have the sharp edges rounded better, but the new ones work just as well.
Re: Receiver sight Question
Thanks for all the advice everyone. I think I will order the Williams and give it a try. Will I need to change my fount sight height or doe's the Williams mount low enough to use the original?

Re: Receiver sight Question
Just in case you are interested, especially if you change the elevation much on the Williams, get a thumb screw that replaces the slotted screw locking down the elevation slide. Makes it much easier to change the elevation. Only problem is, as far as I know, they are only available from Williams. Regards, pecos
Re: Receiver sight Question
My Williams came in this week and I installed it. I left the original sight on and used it to adjust the Williams and then took it off. I decided to try it at 170 yards on the gong to see how close the sight wound up. I hit the gong 20 of 20
. But it's a big gong, about 2'x3'. I hope to get it on paper this weekend to fine tune it in some.
pecos, I now know what you mean about the thumb screw, that may be something to check into. OH, by the way welcome aboard, sorry I didn't notice that sooner.

Re: Receiver sight Question
So did you get the target knobs? How did it go?
Frankly, because I always carry a Leatherman with a screwdriver that works on the Williams I don't worry about the knobs. Once zeroed it isn't changed on a whim. For those lurking who might not know better, that stuff you see in the movie where the dude whips out a rifle, slaps on a sight and goes to whipping the knobs around for that ONE shot is just that, stuff.

Re: Receiver sight Question
I passed on the target knobs, I was concerned that they would be prone to hang/snag on stuff. I plan to work up a good load and stick with it, although Grizzly just started making a 250gr load for the 348 and I have a couple of boxes coming to try out, 2400fps out of a 24 inch barrel. More then likely I will stay with the 200gr Hornady for my standard load.Hobie wrote:So did you get the target knobs? How did it go?
