my lever gun

Post by donw »

the 38/37 carbine...one of the finest firearms i've ever owned, i believe...with or without the optics. it's accurate, hard hitting enough to do what i wish and can be fed economically.

i know there's lotsa "show me" threads but they're very interesting and very informative. i get lots of info and ideas...

you guys?

Looks like a 30mm red-dot Tasco ProPoint. I think they came before the AimPoint but I get them mixed up. Anyway, they are nice if you like red-dots (unlimited eye relief, no magnification). I've used them on heavy rifles and light-recoil handguns, but after busting a BSA red-dot on a 12 gauge breakopen I've resisted the temptation to put a ProPoint on a kicker.

Millet makes a really nice COMPACT (1" tube) red dot, if you like less bulk, or need to use 1" rings.

I have a 'fat' GREEN-dot ProPoint on my 'coyotes-in-the-barnyard' gun. It's kind of Christmasy looking through it at the red laser dot.

IIRC, the Weaver Quick Point (aka "the brush hook") was the first "red dot sight" commercially available, followed a few years later by the original Aimpoint, with the full-length battery tube alongside the sighting tube.

The Tasco red dot came a lot later - but they're pretty good sights for the $$$.

I had a "cheap" ($45) 1" Tasco red dot on my .454 Casull Ruger successfully for several years - w/o any issues.

That's a good idea, Don - turning the sight so the battery turret's vertical & keeping a narrow width to the rifle.

ajmd429 is correct...got the tasco at sports authority a few years ago...so far so good...it's proving to be quite accurate and reliable...i'm a believer in the red dot aiming system for use within close ranges. they're not as accurate as scopes with magnification and crosshairs but hair splitting accuracy is not their intent, yet they're accurate enough to be able to hit the smaller fur bearin' varmints with in closer ranges.

Exactly. My only complaints are that I can't afford a few more, and that I didn't buy one twenty years ago when a friend first said to.
