We got some new old rifles this weekend. The first one is a Remington military rolling block in 45-70 Gov the barrel is in the white and there is no case colors left on the reciever. The bore is bright and with no pits slight rounding to the lands but my dad says it shoots tight groups a 100 yards. This rifle is one my dad had bought about 10 years ago on a good deal. About five years ago I mentioned that I was looking for one and he opened his safe and said " Here I have this one. I only shot it once and havent taken it out of the safe since. Do you want it?" Of course my answer was Heck Yeah . With my deployment schedule and going threw a couple of moves I wasnt able to pick it up from him. Well they drove out this weekend from St. Louis for a visit and brought it and a couple of other guns that he had been holding on to for us out. Needless to say I am a happy camper . Now on to some pic's ( please excuse my poor photo skills)
Here she is. You can see that a rack number of 25 has been painted on the but stock. The exposed portion of the bbl is starting to get a nice patina the metal under the wood is bright. There are no pits in any of the metal work.
Here is one of the upper tang I was trying to show the patten dates. The last date is November 7th 1874 not sure of the manufacture date.
Now here is a gun that my oldest Logan was very happy to see. My dad bought this gun when my wife was first pregnant with Logan. He has been holding on to it ever since waiting for the day that I said I thought he was old enough for it. Logans B-Day is on Aug 23rd he will be 9 years old and I told my dad that this would be a good B-Day to give it to him. Well my folks wont be able to come out that weekend so when they brought it out this weekend I said go ahead and give it to him early. It is a Winchester Model 61 in .22lr the blueing is over 90% and the wood is in great shape with very minor dings. He has been talking all day about taking it out for squirrels since he got it.
I included my feet in keeping with the tradition set by Ysabel.

When I visit my folks the only things they try to put in the car is some spare barn cats. So you scored pretty good. My son just turned 8 last month and we will be going on a squirrel hunts this fall . It's going to be a hoot.
Ben thats to funny.
This made both of my boys happy ( youngest is six). Now they dont have to share the other .22 we have anymore.
Unfortunatly Indiana doen't alow center fire rifle for deer season I would love to take the roller out after whitetail this year. Now the fun begins of working up loads to see what works best. Anyone have any thoughts on Pyrodex RS? It is all I have locally without paying hazmat fees.

Excellent! Those rifles look really nice - and glad you remembered the "tradition"!
I used to live in Midland, MI. The rifle line for deer was about 5 miles south of the city, IIRC. Not sure what an out-of-state deer license would run you. They may have a discount for active-duty military. Probably worth checking out. It would only be a 3 to 4 hour drive for you. Would be fun to use that Remington!!!
There was never a finer rimfire pump gun made, than the 61. I have bought and sold many pumps over the years, but my 61 is a keeper. Your son has been given a very special gift that will last his lifetime.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.
Very cool guns you came into there Jeremy...If I'm not mistaken the roller is the "Remington New York State Improved Model" often called the "NY State Militia Model" The improvement was calibering them down from 50-70 to 45-70 The 50-70 models were all finished armory bright to include the receiver..I'm not positive, but it may be the Improved model was finished the same..So the good news would be that the case colors haven't faded away..Prolly never had them and you've got a real beauty in great original condition.. DROOL

Might I suggest that you give SR4759 and XMP5744 both a good look before you think of shooting Pyrodex !
I use XMP5744 in just about all my pre 1900 Marlin's . Also if you look in the Lyman Cast Bullet Manual they will show you many many smokeless loads okay for a Rollingblock ! And from the pics yours seems to be in pretty nice shape !
Parkers , Mannlicher Schoenauer’s , 6.5mm's and my family in the Philippines !
dont worry about the gun line in Michigan... just learn to shoot slugs.
All the bigger deer in Michigan live in the southern border counties... they eat row crops and look like small beeves.
Indiana has some big bean fed critters too.
Ysbel...I lived on Bombay Road... rifle season always started with a 7mm going off about 100 yards from the house about 6:50 Am. That Michigan gun law is goofy. There are all kinds of places down south that are probably safer to shoot rifles than some of the places north of the shotgun line.
Northern Michigan public land gets overrun by the "orange army"...nuthin like a nimrod from Detroit shooting "sounds" with a .30-06 or larger.

always press the "red" button--- it's worth the effort and the results can be fun

I will give it a go. The reason I was looking at Pyro is I like to make smoke and lots of it but Goex is in short supply around here.

Thou shalt not envy, thou shalt not covet, thou shalt druel though if you don't mind. What a nice score of family heirlooms, hope they stay in the family for generations to come. Wish I inherited my Dad's Trapdoor Springfields but he sold both back in the late 60s (ARGH), speaking of which he used to load his up with mil;d IMR-4198 loads using cast Lyman 400 grain plain base bullets, wish I had that mold still too.
