Went to the Cody Museum today.

Post by Bullard4075 »

My two sons, brother-in-law and I went to the Cody Museum today.
I had not been there in 10 years or so. Quite a bit bigger than I remembered.
I was surprised at the number of visitors from Europe there.
Ate at Irma's. Good food.
It is really worth going.

The drop in the value of the dollar has made the U.S .a cheap vacation spot, where their money goes farther than at home.

The Museum is a fine place to visit. I have been there several times, and will be there again the last week of this month. I am supposed to be pretty busy shooting and fishing, but I hope to get to the Historical Center sometime during the trip.

I am looking forward to my first visit in late spring 2009. I have wanted to make the trip for some time, but day-to-day responsibiliies always seem to take precedence.
I am glad to hear you had a good time.

In 1992 I went through Cody on a hurried trip back home to Oregon, no time for a long stop. But I was overwhelmed at just visiting the Gift Shop inside the place, no admission to do that, and leave when you have to. It was well worth the stop, and have been planning someday to get back and spend a long day or maybe 2 just to drink in all that is there in the museum. Downtown Cody had a gun store I recall seeing that had a big long wooden winchester replica mounted up on the roof of the place, could see it a long way off..

For those planning their first trip, figure on at LEAST two days. You cant see it in one day and do it any justice, there is so much there pretty soon you start to suffer from information overload and you cant absorb any more. For fun, stay at the Irma hotel. For RV's, stay at the Buffalo Bill Reservoir, short drive to town. Lots of other things to see and do in the Cody area. Try to avoid mid-May throught the first of September.

We were there in the later half of June and it isn't so bad. The KOA is also pretty nice (but can be very windy). There are SEVERAL gun stores in town. Malamute is there, too.

There's another couple thousand guns in the basement of the gun wing also, mainly in racks rather than nice display cases, but interesting after seeing the main part of the museum. Most of the other wings (Draper Natural history, Plains Indian, Buffalo Bill) of the museum has some guns also, not to mention a lot of history.

If time permits, Old Trail Town is well worth seeing, it's near the rodeo grounds at the west end of town. All original frontier buildings, and many historical artifacts and guns. A few frontier characters are buried there as well, like John (Jeremiah) Johnson among others.

The huge Winchester is still there, it used to be on top of the hardware store, but it closed years ago. The building now houses an antique shop and motorcycle shop. The old gun is in a sad state of repair now.

We were in Cody in August of last year and sure did enjoy the museum and the big room downstairs was really nice too. We ate at Granny's resturaunt a few times, preety good food. I plumb forgot that Malamute lived there until we got home, I would have called him.
