OT- Neat old SxS

Post by Andrew »

I got the chance to hold a SxS shotgun tonight that was a real beauty. My uncle brought it over, said that his kid(my cousin) couldn't get anyone to work on it. Appearently it has a broken firing pin and a spring or sear is broken. Anyhoo, he took it out to reputable 'smith that said it looked as though it was hand made and maybe of German origin, but, most likely handmade. Boys and girls, I vote for "handmade" too.

This thing was awesome!! It had several qualities that you find in parts made with the human eye/hands. The hammers were a bit rough and not quite symetrical. The Stock had some old checkering that had been rubbed on for quite some time. The whole of it was a tad rough with a lot of tick marks on the reciever and the forestock was withering away; or mayber just made real crappy to begin with. I don't know. The release lever was mounted on the left side bottom and swung back toward the thumb. You had to push down to open and pull it back up to lock it. It closed and stayed that way pretty good but the lever it's self would wonder down and it would come open. The barrels were probably, if I could lend a guess, full cylinders and they looked pretty thin at the ends. It was 100% patina'ed and had some junk, maybe rust, down in both barrels. It was not the best light for inspecting old stuff in nor did I even remeber to snag a pic with the camera, but it was a fun evening for sure.

Just a nice peice of craftmenship if I have ever seen one. I hope it stays in a safe place for others to enjoy looking at and handling it for many more moons. :D

Steve Fischer in Miami does all the work on my shotguns. Give Steve a call, if he can not do the work he will know who can. Steve should be able to get that fine shotgun back in the field.

Did it look something like this one?

I found this old gun a few years back. It was brown with a few cracks in the wood. The checkering was faint. I really like the side lever so I rebuilt it. I have another one I'm working on now. Same gun but with a straight English style stock.

I don't know what maker originated the side lever, but this old gun was a Belgian knock off or trade gun from the late 1800's. It's marked W. Richards sort of like the famous English make Wesley Richards. These Belgian made guns were usually made by apprentices (sometimes referred to as trade guns) and sold cheap to the new frontier hardward/drygoods businesses. Some of these were kinda rough and looked hand made, too.

Here's a pic of the one I'm working on now. This one is a straight engllish style gun with 28" tubes. I may leave them long.

I've got a barrel set for that gun up north. Got it from a friend, someone scavenged the locks for a muzzle loading piece they were building, but the barrels and locking system and forend are in good shape. It's good to see what the rest of the gun looks like. :)
