Hornady Leverlution .45 Colt

Post by CaptainFinn »

I saw an add for this in my latest Cabela's catalogue...I think it's a 225-grain bullet. Has anyone out there seen or tried this, and if so, what are your impressions ?

I already have a couple boxes for the 357 MAG and 44 MAG . But I wasn't aware they had started making them for the 45 Long Colt !

I've checked the Midway and Hornady web sites and there is no mention of a 45 Long Colt with the Leverevolution bullet .

They did however come out this year with the rubber tipped ammo in the 357 MAG , 44 MAG and the 32 Special . Oh yeah I almost forgot , they brought it out in the 22 MAG as well

You might possibly have misread as the 44 MAG is loaded with the 225 grain bullet in the LE ammo !

Cabela's is saying that the 45 colt leverevolution 9spelled it right this time) is an exclusive only to their catalogue/store...I couldn't even find it on the Hornady website.

I'm going to get some of the 44 mag and try it in my Ruger carbine, I'm considering trying the .45 colt, but I reload all my 45's on my Dillon. Hopefully someone out there will try it and I can hear their opinions first.

I think the Hornady Leverevolution ammo is a fad that will fade eventually. But since I have a collection of .45 Colt ammo I will buy some to try when / if it comes out.
I'm a fan of heavier cast and jacketed bullets, so I doubt that puny 225gr bullet will ever make much of an impact on .45 Colt shooters.

So what if it is a fad as you say !

If it generates some intrest and revenue for Hornady I consider that a good thing !

The way I see it if it helps Hornady stay in buisness and afloat then that helps ME .

Like the majority of the folks here I like to handload and cast many of my own bullets .

However I can say that I like these Hornady rubber tipped bullets just fine in my XLR's . And as long as they make them I will most likely just shoot Leverevolution's in my Marlin XLR's .

The LRs are accurate in the three rifles I have tested them in and JimT said the 45-70 worked fine in Africa. Haven't tried the 45 Colt.

Hornady said in one interview , they can`t keep up with the LE orders for several calibers with the .35 Rem. being the most popular new loading. Maybe this fad will be just like the "smokeless powder fad" and just fizzle out in a short time! :D :D :D I believe everybody will eventually go back to black powder and paper patch bullets and give up on this modern stuff.

Geeze, no need to be so touchy. There's room for every bodies opinions here.

6pt-sika,

I stated my opinion about the Leverevolution stuff without quoting anybodies post. You quoted mine - that makes it confrontational at the least. Second response was snippy. I don't know what your problem is but I don't appreciate it.
For crying out loud I'm afraid of what your reaction would have been if I'd disagreed with you about something really important.

Take a chill pill man. Go shoot some of them gummy tipped Hornady rounds and have some fun.

The pointed-tipped bullets shoot just fine. However, at hunting distances out of equal-length barrels, they really offer no advantage over roundnose traditional bullets in cartridges such as the .30 WCF and .35 Remington. Remember, I stated "equal length barrels".

For the handgun cartridges, overall length is limited by the levergun's action or the revolver's cylinder. I would rather fill that space with a chunk of lead, instead of air and a plastic tip.

However, I will concede that the LeverEvolution concept is one of the best marketing campaigns that the gun industry has seen in years. I am glad to see that it has created a lot of interest in leverguns, but ballistically, at hunting ranges, the concept offers no real advantage.
