OT: More Savage Photos.

Post by gamekeeper »

Shot a Jay this morning with a 2" .410 7s. It was pouring down with rain so I didn't take a photo, as the Jay looked more like I drowned it than shot it.
I don't know if you guys shoot Jays, but over here they take Game Birds eggs and the keeper here likes to keep their numbers down.

that is the nicest Savage I have ever seen. I have never owned one because I didn't like the looks of them but if I had ever seen one that looked that nice, I would still own it. I wish you all the best and please keep posting results with that beauty. (ohh, in Pennsylvania, we can't shoot Jays even though they are terror on song birds)

Congrats - interesting as they are, you are the only one I have ever known to actually use one for hunting.

Young fellow I know scored one of those high grade Savage/Fox 20 doubles from the 60's with a single trigger and vent rib.

May I use your photos in the Savage24.com photo gallery? They're very well done.

Granted, I'm a year or so behind on updating the gallery, but never the less... :D

Gamekeeper , you are a trouble maker

I've kinda wanted one of the old solid barrel 24's for a number of years and you just stirred the pot so to speak :o

This is one of those have no need for but sure do want things !

So now I am mildly looking for a Savage or Stevens solid barrel 24

Thanks alot Gamekeeper ! It's all YOUR fault

Yes you are most likely correct :D

I would like one like yours , where the barrels are connected the entire length !

There is another item I am kinda keeping my eyes open for as well !

A Remington Model 591 . This is the clip fed rimfire rifle that shot the 5mm Remington Magnum round

Gamekeeper !

If by chance you had pics of some Roe Deer or Sika deer from your area I would really appreciate seeing them if it wasn't to much trouble ! Dead on the ground or alive in the woods either would be good with me !

Thanks in advance

6pt-sika,
I'll see what I can do. Where I live we have Roe, Fallow and Muntjac.
My son goes to an Agricultural College about four miles away and they have a herd of Sika Deer there.

GK,

I'll say it again, that is THE 24 to have. Yes, they are nice pics. Did you take one on the Landrover? Now there's yet another idea for another calendar. Gamekeepers guns, all photographed on the Landrover.
Sincerely,

Hobie

Seeing your photos of guns on that Land Rover, I am more cognizant of English genteelity than I was seeing some football yobs get on the train at Leeds.

Even though I don't own one at the moment I am a Jeep person thru and thru !

However the older Land Rovers are cool in my mind as well !

We have a guy about 6 miles from me that restores Land Rovers ! He has a couple nice ones now . One short wheel base and a longer one . He also has a pretty nice semi old Range Rover think it's about 15 years old give or take a couple !

Back when I was more a bird hunter I was on a preserve close to Charlottesville . Anyway Patricia Kluge pulled up in her brand spanking new Range Rover and proceeded to pull out her 20 gauge Purdey SxS . Now I have a few english SxS's , but all of mine are Westley Richards , WW Greener and WC Scott . And her's was way way way in another league ! I so wanted to ask her if I could see and possibly shoot that gun , but I bit my tongue !

She was a looker at one time. Then again, any woman with a Purdey in her hands has a certain attractiveness... You should have approached her!

6pt-sika, as an ex Westley Richards barrel filer I don't rate the Purdey as a better gun, just more expensive!

I too love old Land Rovers and Jeeps, back in the eighties when I was a full time Gamekeeper my boss gave me two Land Rovers to use, a 1950 soft top and what he called the "new Land Rover" a 1965 hard top! :)
The one in my photo's belongs to the sporting estate where my son and I live and has not been used for years :( My last Land Rover was a 1956 soft top and for reasons of fuel economy I sold it and bought a little Suzuki Jeep.

Of the english guns I have I think my Greener is the nicest !

It's a medium grade (I think) 12 gauge boxlock with the safety on the tang instead of the side where the side plate would be ! It's also got about 75% coverage of scroll engraving ! I bought this gun when I was 15 for $425 with a "Leg O'Mutton" case !

Gunstarted out as . 2.5" chamber but I had it reamed out to 2.75" . This thing probably killed a couple pickup truck loads of dove !

I have a nice old Westley Richards boxlock 12 gauge . That is nicely engraved (about 50%) with a straight grip stock and bored cylinder and a hair tighter ! This thing was a heck of a quail and grouse gun ! It would be a great gun with some collector value . However whomever had it earlier was hard on it and it shows it years to a certain degree !

Of the WC Scott's I have three . All damascus ! There is a 10 gauge that my grandfather had for years . It was given him by one of the DuPonts ! I also have a 12 gauge and 20 gauge . These belonged to one of the heirs of the Peters cartridge company . All three of these guns have the little glass hammer windows on the sidelocks . The 10 gauge was my grandfathers dove gun for many many years ! He also used it to kill hawks quite a bit from what he used to tell me !

It is my intention to make some smokeless buckshot loads for the 10 gauge and at some point slay a poor unsuspecting whitetail with it ! I have some load data somewhere that Ross Seyfried made up for a 10 gauge he has just like the one I have ! These guns are chambered 2 7/8" .
