OT - Telegraph Fire Photos (Lots of Aircraft)

Post by don Tomás »

Well, I was on vacation last week and what did we do? We watched what became known as the Telegraph Fire head our way. How's that for great timing??? The fire break the bulldozers put between us and the fire held and we're ok, although us and everything we own smells like we've been camping. Here's some photos of our little fire...

You bet Griff. Us and our stuff can be washed. Couple of families from church weren't so lucky and lost their homes...

My step-daughter is a CDF fire fighter. She spent several weeks fighting the San Diego County fires last year. This year she opted to work at the tanker base at the Redding Airport. Next year she said she would go back to a station.

Many years ago, as a young airman, I "volunteered" (don't say it I know, never volunteer) to work a fire up at "Rim of the World", near Big Bear Lake California. A week later I had learned "never volunteer". Fast forward five or six years and I had an chance to work for the CDF. In one of my smarter moves, I turned it down. Those that do this type or work are a special breed. They put it all out there in ways most will never understand. The works if probably the hardest there is, you go days without enought rest, not to mention being dirty all the time. When you come in off the line, the only thing you want to do is sleep. And there is no way you can carry enough water not to be thirsty. Trust me, being really thirsty sucks. So to those follow this calling, my hat is off to you. Be safe.

Back when I was 16 (eons ago, I'll be 68 this Mo.) CDF could pull drivers off the road and send them to the fire line. My buddie and I were headed to the river when we got snagged. Made up my mind right then that wasant the kind of work I wanted to do.

My wifes father (now deceased) was instramental(sp) in getting the Hot Shots started. He and my mother in law were both certified tower look outs. Wife worked for CDF during the time of the 49er fire (late 80's) in N Cal.
I have nothing but the utmost respect for fire fighters and the pilots that fly the Choppers and Bombers.
