"Wall Hangers".... ***...

One of our employees brought in some "wall hangers" for me to identify.

There was a Hercules 12ga break and a H&R 12ga Break in fair to poor condition - definately "traditional" wall hangers - but shootable if tidied up.

Then came the heartbreaks:

A 1950 W94. No bluing, decent bore:






And (***) a rusty 1911 Savage 99 in .30-30 (if I read the pitted markings correctly) with a cracked up stock and rusty bore.







And he won't shoot them... or part with them (they were his dad's) ... He is going to hang them on the wall...

Was the "wall" these were hanging on under water? What a shame.

It's Indiana. 83%+ humidity is a common occurance.

I lived in the upper midwest and Florida over the last 30 years........humidity is a problem.
Still..those guns are a shame.

The Savage looks like it was used as a club.........

Those are not simple "wall hangers' - they are what's referred to as "gray rats", more's the pity.

Some folks just have no respect, to paraphrase Rodney - including my own sister - who put her first husband's (she had a couple) only gun (a rimfire rifle) under their front porch to "get it out of the house", since "he never used it".

The Winny is actually pretty nice... though it looks more like a "well loved" 1920s gun than a 1950 gun. Bore is decent (no pits) and the action is smooth. No Idea why there is no bluing on it, but other than that and the surface pitting you see it's pretty clean. I wish I could save it.

The Savage could probably be salvaged by lopping off the first 2" of barrel and re-crowning. Give it a new stock and I think it would be a shooter. It cycles .30-30 just fine, though not as smoothly as the Winny.

Here's my guess: These guns were brought to Indiana in the 60s or 70s when the owner got out of the AF... and he found out he couldn't use them for Deer here. So they sat in an unconditioned closet/garage/whatever.

Humidity got to them, but the 94 was handled just enough more to keep it servicable.

1911 is old enough that there might be some interesting history on that old battered frame....
