Lyman 66 on LSI Puma???

Post by CraigC »

Are there any issues with installing this receiver sight on the Puma? I plan on doing some horsetrading and ordering one this week, a stainless .44Mag Trapper model. I'll do away with the silly safety on the bolt. Anybody know what thread pitch the screws are, 6-48? I set myself up with a lathe and milling fixture for another recent project so I'll be doing the D&T work myself. If the front sight is too short, what are my options? Thanks, fine sirs.

Craig,

Yes the threads are 6-48. All you need to do is make sure you have the base as low as you can get it with the adjustment bar all the way down. The Lyman 66A has an angled part at the top of the base that matches the contour of the receiver side. I usually have the base mounted to mate up with this angled area.

I didn't "need" a taller front sight on the Rossi puma I had a receiver sight mounted on, but it had the kind that was mounted in the barrel band. That had to go so I did play around to get the correct height front sight.

Brownells has a sight height calculator on their website. It should be 6/48 thread. The size and color of the front bead is a personal preference. I like 3/32 gold bead usually a lyman. Most are around .500 high but that's on 30/30 and 32 special.

Thanks for the info gents! I'll keep that in mind Joe when I go to determine where to mount the sight. Good gun shops are rare as hen's teeth around here so I'm a little "out of the loop" and unable to look before I buy. I was able to handle the same gun in .45Colt a couple weeks ago but that shop is 50miles away. Do these guns have a standard 3/8" dovetail front sight or are they still doing the one-piece barrel band/front sight setup? Looking at auction sites, it looks as if its a 3/8" dovetail cut in the barrel behind the band. If that's how it is, I won't even worry about it. I've probably got what I'll need in my spare parts box. I've got some XS plastic test sights too. Thanks again.

Craig,

I "think" the later ones have gone to the dovetail on the barrel. But I won't swear to it. An email to Steve ( http://www.stevesgunz.com/ ) would get the quick answer to that.

Looks like it. I found this one on Gunbroker. I was worried they were doing an odd sized dovetail slot in the barrel band but it looks like a standard 3/8" cut in the barrel. Cool, thanks!

I had one of these on my 454 Puma. It was a very poorly made sight and the tolerances on it were terrible. The aperture mount wobbled and an adjustment screw eventually snapped from recoil. I went to a Williams sight and it is much better made.
