OT - went to the range today

Post by AmBraCol »

One of my friends arranged a "range day" at the local battalion. A whole slew of folks showed up, including a couple of friends and some acquaintances. We had a good time standing around just chewing the fat. There were six targets set up at 25 meters and they organized folks into squads of six to take turns shooting -with their own weapons and ammo. The good thing is that they had "free sales of ammo" to the participants. By that, we were allowed to pay about 10% more than regular prices and get it "off the books" which means that it didn't affect our usual ration of 100 rounds each six months. Sometimes it stinks to be broke, I could only swing 100 rounds of 38 spl RNL (the only kind they sell here) for a mere $58 or so a box... :o  But once I get another $115 or so together I can pick up my regular ration too. So I've got "an extra" 100 rounds of ammo this year. I stood around chatting a while with the guys but decided to not pop a cap - I prefer heading up to the club and having the place mostly to myself where I can shoot at my leisure rather than putting up with the crowd. Still, had a good day, even sold some of my secret formula gun lube and rest inhibitor which helped pay for some of the ammo I bought. $1.15 a round... I can't believe the price of ammo here.

Yes, but you're safer because the government controls everything .... RIGHT?????????

Just think, with ammo strictly regulated and so expensive, the bad guys can't practice as much, so they can't hit anything.

Right, I believe that too.

Well, not only THAT, but since they've forbidden carrying weapons (by temporarily suspending all carry permits) on weekends the bad guys can't do any harm until Monday morning after 6:00 a.m.. That's why there has been NO "gun violence" on weekends lately... gasp, cough, choke... yeah, right...

At $1.15 a round for .38 Special I am afraid I would have to go back to .44 Cap and Ball for practice with a replacement cylinder for .45 Long Colt for carry.
Good Luck with the price and I am impressed you still practice at all.

Are there restrictions on .22 rimfire? And how much do they cost?

Paul -

Can you accumulate your ammo allowance or do you have to shoot it up before you can buy another 100 rounds? How much total ammo do they let you have on hand for all your firearms?

I'll try to answer the questions and comments to this point.

Black powder is difficult to find. Long arms that use black powder are theoretically exempt from restrictions, but that doesn't mean that they are easily found. I've still not found a source for caps, for example, and have only located one quarter pound of FFFg powder.

As for 22 LR? They are under the same restriction as other ammo - 100 rounds each six months. Price? Last I saw it was about $15 or nearly $20 per 100. I didn't pay much attention because I still don't have a 22. There's a Walther 22 pistol at the battalion a friend tells me - but at nearly $2,000 I'm not in a rush to go down and see about it...

As for accumulating, why I do something like that? ;) I DO keep every single empty case, plus any I can pick up, in case they DO go to a "Bring in your empties if you want new ammo." policy. Also, I keep hoping they'll eventually allow us to reload. That alone would be worth the price of admission to the Shooting and Hunting Federation (currently close to $200 per year - makes the NRA look like a REAL bargain, especially since there's no publication that goes with the membership here).

Y'all keep on fighting for our rights. I do what I can from here, and am thankful that at least I'm allowed a weapon and ammo - even if there ARE some idiotic restrictions. The funny thing? I can walk into the airport, hand over my gun at the police counter and receive it at my destination. Try that in "the land of the free"... you'd better have it packed, unloaded and not get it out at your destination until you've left the building... it's a weird world we live in indeed...

Paul,

I haven't counted them, but I'd guess that at $1.15 per round I've close to $3,000.00 worth of 38 Spcl ammo stored away. And nothing really to shoot it from. I hate shooting 38s out of a .357 so I just leave them stored away for someday when I get another 38.

Considering the prices of ammo now up in the U.S. it won't be long till we are paying what you are. As a matter of fact my last box of Winchester .45 Colt Silver Tips cost me $23.99 for 20 rounds. So in reality, depending on the ammo, we are already there.
