I'll try to answer the questions and comments to this point.
Black powder is difficult to find. Long arms that use black powder are theoretically exempt from restrictions, but that doesn't mean that they are easily found. I've still not found a source for caps, for example, and have only located one quarter pound of FFFg powder.
As for 22 LR? They are under the same restriction as other ammo - 100 rounds each six months. Price? Last I saw it was about $15 or nearly $20 per 100. I didn't pay much attention because I still don't have a 22. There's a Walther 22 pistol at the battalion a friend tells me - but at nearly $2,000 I'm not in a rush to go down and see about it...
As for accumulating, why I do something like that?
I DO keep every single empty case, plus any I can pick up, in case they DO go to a "Bring in your empties if you want new ammo." policy. Also, I keep hoping they'll eventually allow us to reload. That alone would be worth the price of admission to the Shooting and Hunting Federation (currently close to $200 per year - makes the NRA look like a REAL bargain, especially since there's no publication that goes with the membership here).
Y'all keep on fighting for our rights. I do what I can from here, and am thankful that at least I'm allowed a weapon and ammo - even if there ARE some idiotic restrictions. The funny thing? I can walk into the airport, hand over my gun at the police counter and receive it at my destination. Try that in "the land of the free"... you'd better have it packed, unloaded and not get it out at your destination until you've left the building... it's a weird world we live in indeed...
But once I get another $115 or so together I can pick up my regular ration too. So I've got "an extra" 100 rounds of ammo this year. I stood around chatting a while with the guys but decided to not pop a cap - I prefer heading up to the club and having the place mostly to myself where I can shoot at my leisure rather than putting up with the crowd. Still, had a good day, even sold some of my secret formula gun lube and rest inhibitor which helped pay for some of the ammo I bought. $1.15 a round... I can't believe the price of ammo here.
