The September '08 issue of Shooting Times has a neat article on black powder by Micheal E. Bussard. Informative, well-written, and puts forth some good hypotheses.
Hopefully this article will make it into the archives on their website.

Very well written article. When I was in high school me and my buddy made black powder . Just went to the drug store and bought salt peter ,which was potassium nitrate. I don't how efficient it was but it went boom in my black powder pistol.
