OT - a short video of a jeep ride on vacation

Post by O.S.O.K. »

Here's a video of our trip up to Tin Cup Pass in Colorado -the trail was marked "moderate" but I would rate it "easy" as there were really no hard spots at all. The trail was rougher than it looks like in the video (looks like a normal gravel road...) but nothing too tough - a normal truck would've been able to make it up and down this trail - but it was fun and the view from the top was great - and we didn't have to hike up to see it. We did a 6 1/2 mile up/down hike to a lake the day before and that was enough for this trip. We also took an all day whitewater rafting trip down the Arkansas river after this but I don't have any video of that...

Yes they do but my Jeep never kicked me and doesn't smell or leave road apples on the trail :) And when I tell it to go, it goes without "discussion" ;)

The first part looks like a drive in the park, got a little rougher at the end. I've been on lots of high Colorado roads that were that rough or rougher and I think it's great fun. We took our Jeep to Utah this past May and did a few rough roads.

Until it runs out of hay. :D Although hay out here, WA St., is skyrocketing and going off the charts.

A jeep in the Colorado mountains. It just seems right.

If you rafted the Arkansas and Jeeped over Tin Cup, you were in Buena Vista, about 30 minutes from my house. If you went over tin Cup, then you should recall the large beam structure that overhangs the road at one point. I have somewhere a picture of my CJ 5 parked under it.

Yep - nail on the head. Tin Cup was still snowed in and impassible when we went up - we were on the side that starts at St. Elmo where the hummingbirds and chipmunks (mini bears) are.

We also hiked up to a lake - 6.3 miles up - just up the road from where we camped which was just up the road from Buena Vista - forget the name of the campground - just a small 20 or so campsite deal along the stream. Beautiful though.

The trail was quite a bit rougher than it looks on the vid - the details are washed out - the rocks were about softball to basketball sized with only a few spots that you had to crawl over and just a few wet/muddy spots.

The last time I was in CO 4x4ing we were in our old red Cherokee and drove from Ouray to Teluride and it was rougher than this trail - also had a long section cut out of a huge scree slide on the side of a mountain just over the pass - it was very narrow and it was hard to figure what was keeping the road in place... :)

We came back from Mesa Verde last month via Silverton and Ouray. I would say that section of the Rockies is the most scenic in CO, and I've been all over most of them.

I drove that strip of U.S. 550 / U.S. 50 from Bloomfield, NM to Grand Junction, CO which included that piece of road between Silverton and Ouray last November .

All I can say about the drive is "HOLY stuff" . There are places up there that the sun never shines upon, and hair-pin turns that were inside the turning radius of my C1500, and pavement that disappears "over the edge".

Livin' in TX, I've spent way too long in the flatlands, and was glad to get back to them.
(Next time, I'll drive the Jeep.)

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.
