Which lever for my August pronghorn hunt?

Post by crs »

Once again, in late August, we are off to the plains of Northern New Mexico to hunt pronghorns and prairie rats. :D

Last year I took my prairie goat with my 1886 .45-90, but this year I also have a choice of my new 1895 .405 (never taken game) or my recently refurbished 1892 .357 ( shot lots of stuff, but none in its current form).
I will be using my .22 hornet with VMAX loads for the rats, but need to make up my mind on the goat gun and get to practicing soon.

mmmm? :)

Were it me, it'd be the .405 with some of the .300 grain Hornady spire points. That would give you wide latitude with regard to range, I'd think. Plus, it's a new rifle.

Ok, it will be the .405 for the pronghorn.
I will go kill something else with the .357 this year. :D

I assume that your going to hunt around Clayton. If this is the case, 405 would be perfect in my opinion.

Good hunting. :P

Morgan -Actually, we are to hunt a ranch just south of Des Moines, NM. This is a few miles east of Mt Capulin. One of our hunters drove through there this past week on his way to Colorado and was to have checked out the ranch house and terrain on the ranch.

He will make a report next week upon return to Dallas.

Don't forget to post the pictures with the 405 and the goat.

I think you should use your new gun, the one you haven't gotten yet. May I suggest a 308 Marlin Express XLR, a Savage 99 in .250-3000 or a nice Win 88 in .243.

Man, I would love to have a Savage 99 or a Win 88, but I may need the money to pay for the gas for the trip.
