LUCKY TO BE ALIVE, SURVIVED ROLLOVER INTO CANAL
Yesterday, after work my neighbor calls me up to go for a ride
in the woods, to look for deer, hogs, turkeys, and check out
the sporting clays course my neighbor always brags about..
Well we saw a bunch of deer and turkeys......and cattle...
so my neighbor decides he wants to drive the cattle to the south
side of the property....5000 acres..Well we pushed them as
far as we could.... they couldnt go any farther because of a canal....
so we decide to head back and pick up a tree stand....
This is where it gets real fun...
He decided to take a left instead of a right....I told him he
was going the wrong way....but he didnt believe it and kept going.
I told him your gonna end up by the wash out that we passed
earlier......and sure enough...He was wrong....Because of the canal
he had to back out....and he made it back to the intersection
but did not back up far enough....cut the wheel to go over
culvert....embankment gave way...and the ride was on....
We roled in slow motion into the 10' deep canal...and landed on
the roof....The passanger side....my side...was at the bottom of
the canal....I was underwater for about 20 or 30 seconds before
I found a air pocket...cought my breath...stuggled to get free...
and worked my way to the driver side window...and climbed out.
Lost my glasses and my favorite hat! @#@#$$%$...Cant see well,
No cell phone, no flash lights....could not find anything in the canal.
Now its getting dark....and we started the 3 mile walk out of the swamps on the logging roads....3 miles is a long way when your soaking wet and its hotter than....well you know! My neighbor had no idea which way to go...and i never been there before....but
I was paying attention...I knew the highway was to the north...
and told him I'm going this way.....He finally agreed.
We finally made it out of the woods to a major power line
hopped on the hunt club tractor and rode the last 1/2 mile
to the highway. After 1 hour of walking on the highway...
and older woman in a corvette stopped and let me use her
cell phone...I bet 50 cars and trucks passed without stopping...
Anyway.... we made it home safe, sore and tired....
Needless to say I aint going anywhere with that turkey again!

Glad to hear you're ok. Let's see, no sense of direction, unwilling to listen to voice of reason, poor driving skills... 3 strikes - you're out! I certainly wouldn't ride to the grocery store with 'im, let alone out in the boonies!

Glad you're ok but don't stop going with the guy -- just take your water-wings and small scuba buddy tank when you go.

Just think how boring life would be without pals like your neighbor!
A long walk at night builds character, solo more so, in a storm even more so.
When you cheat death, life is even sweeter.
I wouldn't punch your neighbor in the nose I would give him a cigar for the memories, I doubt if he twisted your arm to go with him, sh-- happens.
here's to soggy shoes and holster's
good luck

wow, that was some afternoon. I am glad you are O.k.
Roll-over auto accidents into canals are much more common than one might think.
I think you got the right idea to not ride with that guy again.

Re: LUCKY TO BE ALIVE, SURVIVED ROLLOVER INTO CANAL
Most life ends in rather a un-dramatic manner; simply and quickly from some screwup involving a ladder, electricity, or an automobile, or slowly while drooling and staring at a television in a nursing home.
We (gun owners) pontificate about WW-III, 'survival' guns, and whether a laser-sighted semiauto pistol is better than a DA revolver with fixed sights, yet the decision of how far to back up when turning around on a narrow road is likelier to lead to our demise.
Thankfully you survived, and likely you'll savor every moment of life just a little more from now on.

Well, once again, glad you are well. I can remember several cases of similar things that happened with my best friend as I was young. We came out of them glad but laughing. He is gone now and is symbolized in one of the ear rings I wear on my left ear. If this guy was a buddy going into this, have a beer with him and laugh over this one. Just be careful out there. If you don't have history with this person, then be double careful.

Re: LUCKY TO BE ALIVE, SURVIVED ROLLOVER INTO CANAL
Thanks guys
Still pretty sore...especially in my shoulder
from slamming into the roof of the truck...
but all in all I'm feeling pretty good....
heres the update...
After we got home....I just took a shower
and went to bed....and didnt sleep a wink!
Turns out my neighbor went back to his truck
to pick up a whaterver he could find..wallet, gun,
tools, etc..... He found my glasses! But.....
Some gator is swimming around with my favorite hat!
That night we had another 3 or 4 inches rain....
and the following day another 3 or 4 too!
My wife talk to his wife the next day and she said they
got the truck out....and the wreckers said it was pretty
close to totaled...and apparently with all the rain...the
wrecker had a real tough time getting this far back in the
swamp...
I cant imagine how much this is gonna cost him.
thanks again

So let's see ... a) has a bad sense of direction, b) argues with someone with a proper sense of direction, c) is poor at estimating distances while maneuvering a large vehicle in a tight space. I'm afraid you may have been duped into driving around in the woods with a woman claiming to be a man. The guy should certainly have his Man Club privileges suspended pending an inquiry.
Is that the same favorite hat that Duff L Bagg perforated during your skeet shoot a few months back?
Glad to hear you're ok. Sounds like a little soreness from bangin' around in there was about as well as it could have turned out. Obviously, it could have gone much worse.
Of course, should you choose to go driving around in the woods again with this guy ... I would like to go ahead and call dibs on that 1892 in 38-40.
