I pull from the back of the gun safe a mint MAS 45 I purchased back in the early 90s new in the wrap.. Well it was loaded up with cosmo & after going after it with solvent & stiff bristle brushes it became evident it was going to take more than all night (I was at work) to get it degreased..Having used the Hot Washer before to degrease an SKS with good results I went ahead & did the same with the Mas...Cleaned it up in about a half hour.. Rinsed it in fresh water & sprayed it down with LPS... all seemed well until today when I pulled it out of the safe..Been a couple of years since I handled it...Rust blooms are coming up thru the parkerizing on the barrel!.. They appear as dark spots..Looks like I should have used the solvent Bluing on the SKS is still fine...Live & learn...Hope this for warns anyone else that may want to do this with a parkerized gun..

Bummer. Probably due to the porosity/increased surface area of the parkerizing holding moisture.

LPS is..Actually It was LPS#2, is a multi-purpose lubricant and penetrant with added corrosion protection. It forms a long lasting, oily film lubricant.

Sorry to hear that, it sucks even when it's just a beater gun. I have almost all of the rust off of my ROA except for a little in the cylinders and the threaded holes. Everywhere else is clean and blue. No more Pyrodex for it.

I hate to see you suffering with that rusty old rifle in your gun safe. You can just send it to me along with a $20.00 bill to pay the FFL to make the transfer. I'll keep it well out of your sight and you can forget about it for a few more years.

Don't bother thanking me. I know you'd do the same for me if the shoe was on the other foot.

Doc..too late..In order to get myself out of my funk I began sporterizing it last night.. I sand blasted off the Parkerizing...The rust under it was hardly anything really..was more in the Park..Weird! Then I went ahead and milled off the funky military aperture sight that had all those unsightly ranging numbers.. Next I'll wack the barrel back to 20"..( never did like the slip in Target front sight post feature with the push button detent locking mechanism ) also d&t the receiver for a scope mount..I've got a redfield jr. mount for a Mod. 43 Win. that can be modified to work pretty well I think...I'll have to mod the bolt handle too...Prolly weld a new one on.. Convert the Mauser wing safety to Model 70 Win. style....Prolly will sell the stock, trigger & guard on EvilBay.. Then I'll have to modify a Mauser Timney trigger & make a new trigger guard..As far as the new stock goes I'm looking into some sort of black synthetic for a Mauser ..If I get really lucky it will have the trigger guard molded on & I won't have to make one...I can use black Accra Glass in order to get a good looking no gap bedding job.. When life gives ya lemons make lemonade! Right?

The next time you or anyone else for that matter gets a gun wet, spray it down with Corrosion X. It will actually penetrate water and put a protective coating on the steel.

+1 for Corrosion-X on parkerizing. Works wonders, and definitely out-protects LPS in my experience.

All of my Blued Steel & Stainless Steel weapons have been cleaned of all external oils and or grease and coated with Trewax.We all learned about Trewax from our gunsmith who delivered all of the weapons he built & blued or serviced with a coating of Trewax.He said a minute amount of oil is only for the inner workings of weapons.I've seen too many stocks ruined from the use of oil on the blued steel barrels .Oil a barrel then store it butt down and the oil migrates downward into the wood softening and ruining it.When blued or SS is coated with trewax it's impervious to water & blood,I saw walnut stocked rifles with Blued Steel barrels that came in for service from hunts in the Tongass NF in Alaska w/o any rust,they were just well used & dirty .

Don't know about that. Check out this link on Trewax. Guy doesn't seem to like it.
