Tang sight on Savage 99

Post by jnyork »

I notice Brownells has listed Marbles tang sights for the Savage 99. Does anyone have a photo of this installation they could post? I want to see exactly what the sight looks like on the gun, and how tall it is. Thanks.

Jack O'Connor once wrote about a lady deer hunter who fired her 99 in 300 Savage at an uphill angle during a western hunt. Under recoil, the tang sight damaged her retina beyond repair and she lost sight in that eye.

Be careful. Please.

The ones I have seen look like a 57 SME mounted on a long base that screws to the tang. Not like the tang sights for say a Winchi 30-30.

Here is the vintage Redfield that is mounted on my little 99H .30-30. The hardest parts to find were the screws to mount the sight. The gun is wonderfully accurate with this sight, too. :D

How tall could it be? This is a pic of my my 99 with Williams FP on the tang.

There would be a post and a base but it couldn't be much taller and functional. I've seen vintage sights so mounted and I don't think the stem is much if any over 1" above the tang.

It's an inch tall at the most. Check to see if Marbles shows it on their site or maybe you can download a catalog. Good Luck !

Some guys get tang and receiver sights confused. These photos should be helpful.

Here's a Savage, with a vintage Lyman tang sight. It does sit back a little on the tang.

The Savage 99 is somewhat unique as both the traditional tang sight and the reciever sight both fasten on the tang. here was at one time a tang sight that fastened at the rear of the tang, but they have not been availablle for years. The current peep sights depend on the safety arrangment as to how they attach. The older trigger guard slidinng safety takes a sight that screws to the tang and looks just like the Lyman 57 that is used on the T/C muzzleloaders. The rifles with the sliding safety in the tang take a side mounted RECEIVER sight.

Everybody want to be a comedian!! :D

This question was posed as a favor to my buddy who lacks a computer, he bought the Savage 1899 25-35, I posted some pics here a few days ago. He got to the gunshop ahead of me and bought it before I even knew it was there (knashes teeth, pounds on knee, turns green with envy)!!

Thanks to those who took is seriously enough to try to help out. The rest of you belong on stage somewhere  ( the next one out of town would be good). :D
