OT: H&R 20G USH-TS Range Report (and Recoil Issue Follow-Up)

Post by Haycock »

First of all, I am somewhat embarrassed that my first range report to this forum is an OT post.

My bad    .... I've just never gotten it together to record results, write them down, make time to write a long post about it, etc.

I will do better in the future, oh levergunners!

Anyhoo, here goes... actually sorta two topics here.....

Range Report

Started looking into slug guns recently because I can't shoot deer on my property with anything but that or a bow, and though I'm hunting archery again this year I also want to gun-hunt in order to take the maximum number of bambi off my land... I have Lyme AGAIN and so does my wife.

The deer must GO!

Plus they taste good.

Anyway, in looking into sluggers I encountered a ton of speculation regarding the new H&R Ultragon rifling and its possible impact on accuracy of the Ultra Slug Hunters, and since I was lucky enough to acquire a 20g USH with thumbhole stock and the new rifling recently, and conduct some accuracy testing, I thought I'd share...

Though I didn't take any pictures yet (I have the target with the best results right next to me and I'll try to get to posting a photo) I have the following accuracy data to report:

Federal Premium Vital-Shok Barnes Expander (P209XS) 3" 273gr 1900fps
- 3-shot 2" group with 2 5"-6" flyers low/right (after fouling shot)

Winchester Supreme Partition Gold 3" 280gr 2000fps
- 3-shot 1" group with 2 4" flyers low/center (fouling shot included in main 1" group)

Hornady SST 2 3/4" 250gr 1800fps
- Multiple 3-shot 2"-3" groups (all shots from cold/clean barrel)
- 1 3-shot 1.125" group with 1 2" flyer low/left (after additional/separate 1" high fouling shot, no cleaning in-between)

Lightfield Hybred Exp 2 3/4" 385gr 1502fps
- 4-shot 2" group with 1 3" flyer low/left (fouling shot included in main 2" group)

Hastings Laser Accurate 2 3/4" 410gr 1475fps
- 3-shot 2" group with 2 2" flyers low/left (fouling shot included in main 2" group)

And.....

finally....................

wait for it...........................................................

...
...
...

Remington Premier Copper Solid 2 3/4" 273gr 1500fps
- 5-shot 1" group (no, seriously... I quadruple checked the target... two shots almost went into ORH.... it was beautiful!!!)

Recoil Follow-Up

Okay... so I have posted previously about my bum shoulder and the pain I've had with centerfire riflery, and how I've moved to lower-recoil options like .357 and light .30-30 loads, .22 LR and Mag, etc.

It was with great hesitation that I bought the USH and shot it, but I figured since it has a Decelerator on it and the 20g sluggers have less recoil than the only other slug gun I have ever shot (Browning BPS w/ a 12g 3.5" slug load that hurt me so bad off a bench 10 years ago that I felt it for two days), I might be okay.

Funny thing was, it was okay!

So now I am confused. I don't know if my shoulder is healing, or the USH rig shoots softer than other centerfire rifles that've hurt me, like .300 Savage, .243, 6.5x55, etc. (which somehow I doubt), or if I'm just getting used to the recoil (don't think so, cuz I had no pain at all), or what!

Clearly, now I am going to go and get some standard .30-30 loads to put through my M94 to see how that feels, but I gotta say........ my head is spinning.

Any thoughts, guys?

I'll let the no picture situation slide and give you an A-. Thanks for the report.

I like those H&R Slugguns and wouldn't mind getting a Tracker II for messing around with.

Are the results from 50 yards or 100 yards?
Lyme is nasty. What did the doc give you?

Unfortunately these were are 50 yard groups... so the accuracy I am expecting from the piece is 2MOA at 100yds with the best load of the lot.

I am on doxycycline for the Lyme.... had it before.... bad (IVs twice, 18-month saga, etc.).

Nasty, nasty bug... no doubt.

Fewer deer.... fewer deer ticks!

[Funny thing was, it was okay! ]

[So now I am confused.]

[I don't know if my shoulder is healing, or]

Prolly the first, IMHO !

You're just confused by the fence-sitting position most modern doctors are forced to take in these litigeous society days, under the thumb of the entity that's really paying them - some HMO.
Soooo, they always err 300% on the side of caution.

My shooting/hunting partner (68yo) has broken his neck twice and his back once - and with the screws in his ankles, etc, was told he couldn't shoot anything heavier than a .22 for the rest of his life.

I told him he might as well be dead, and we started over, just like a youngster starting out on guns - baby steps.

He's now up to shooting a .30-30 Glenfield & .20ga H&R Pardner II slug gun, right alongside me !

Sure hope you're right!

I'm gonna put it to the test.... bought some Core-Lokt 150s and 170s today to put through the 94... also a couple more slug loads for the twenny... higher velocity stuff than the copper solids, that I haven't already tried...

Its been a couple of sessions and a couple days since the last one... and my arm hasn't fallen off at the rotator cuff yet!
