Koala survives 60-mph hit, 7 miles in grille

Marsupial bounces back from shock after he's cut from front of vehicle

CANBERRA, Australia - A koala that cheated death after being hit by a car at about 60 mph and dragged with his head jammed through the vehicle grille for about 7 miles is being dubbed Australia's luckiest marsupial.

The eight-year-old male koala, named "Ely 'Lucky' Grills" by rescuers, was struck by an unwitting motorist north of Brisbane and found only when the car stopped after being flagged down by another vehicle.

"To have him survive and virtually unscathed is quite miraculous," Australian Wildlife Hospital spokeswoman Carolyn Beaton told Reuters on Tuesday.

"Lucky" hung on during his ordeal with one arm and his trapped head, and was freed with household scissors used like a fireman's "jaws-of-life" to cut around the car's mesh grille with the horrified owner's permission, Beaton said.

"Whilst Lucky was in shock, he quickly recovered and was nearly better after a couple of hours rest and a feed," she said.

Lucky will stay at the hospital, set up by the late television wildlife and crocodile crusader Steve Irwin, for 45 days to recover from his experience and receive treatment for a chlamydial infection.

Either way, are we sure "Lucky" didn't intend to jump in front of the vehicle?

To show you just how tough Koalas are, let me share an age old recipe for them.
Place Koala in a large pot with a rock, boil until the rock is soft, then throw away the Koala and eat the rock.

They may look cute and cuddly but just try and grab one and you will soon learn that those claws are not only used for hanging onto gum trees.

How do you hit a Koals and have it stuck in your grill and not know??

How did the Koala get stuck in the grill, usually they are walking across the road and just get flattened?

Did it jump up at the last moment in what it thought was it's last great act of defaince?

Come on you conspiracey theorists, WHET REALLY HAPPENED HERE???

Hmmmmm... Just got the good oil from my neighbour, a Queenslander who saw the light and came west.

He reckons this is one of the oldest tricks in the book. "Frequently", he said, "a koala, which is kinda sloth like on the ground, may want to move more swiftly to a where the gum leaves are greener. He'll lay out in the road pretending to be road kill and most drivers will want to avoid spashes of decaying bear so they'll straddle the little blighter. As the bumper bar reaches him, said koala simply reaches up and swings aboard." "That", he said, "is fair dinkum!"

Makes sense to me...

Crikey Bruce, I thought only the nullarbor wombats knew that trick.

They warned us about a lot of stuff, but I must have been on sick call when they talked about koalas...
