Another levergun score at the local shop (Range report)

Post by 2ndovc »

Picked up this Model 88 in .308 at the local shop.

Image

We'll see how she shoots in the morning. Sorry for the cheapo photo, Storming out so I had to make do.

Forgot the best part.. $365.00 OTD! :D

We'll she can shoot too!

Don't think it's hardly been fired the action is pretty stiff and overall it's barely got a mark on it. It came w/ two magazines, both Winchester but one works a little smoother than the other.
The scope is probably the same vintage. It's a Bushnell Scopecheif. Kinda neat. Flip a little lever and it adds a heavy post to the bottom of the reticle.
First shot was a little low on the target. A couple clicks up and I was right on w/ Factory Rem. 150 Gr. FMJs. Didn't seem to like my 180 gr SPs that I'd made for another rifle.
After sighting in the scope I got one three shot group at 50 yds into a 5/8" hole. Reload and two more into 1/4" !!
Needless to say I'm pretty pleased :D

All shots were at 50 yds. Hazy, humid stormy morning.

Spent a little time w/ my 25-20 cadet rifle too.

Try Federal 150s - they shoot the best in mine.

The Autumn Gun - my wife named it - no over riding that.

Sort of gives a guy hope that a good deal is still to be found somewhere. Congrats on a somewhat rare rifle, at least around here they are not on every street corner.

OS,

You were right. Preferred the 150 Gr. bullets.

By the way, beautiful range. Must be nice. Probably in your backyard ... right?

Not quite, i'm right on the edge of town. I can get away with shooting .22s but I have to go the range for the big stuff. Still only a 7 min. drive!

I couldn't agree more! How about a rundown on the .25-20?

I bought the Martini about a year ago. Still had the original barrel but had been re-bored to .357Mag. Couldn't get any decent groups with any of my loads so I slugged the bore. .360!! So I decided it was time for another project so off it went to the gunsmith along with that set of BSA sights that I'd been hanging on to for some time.
After a month of deciding on the caliber I chose the 25-20 since I had a bunch of components for it.

A new Shaw barrel and re-blue ( guy did a beautiful job ) and the sights installed and off to the range.
With factory loads I was getting under an inch at fifty yards. Haven't been able to reproduce that with my hand loads, but that's half the fun isn't it?

Great little rifles. I had several at one time but got an attack of the " dumba$$" and sold all but one.
