Calling all Marlin collectors... What can you Marlin guys tell me about this antique Marlin octagon, lever rifle? Thanks.

It looks like a basic #2 Ballard that someone has either refinished or replaced the wood on it. If the bore is good it's a great price.

I can't tell you anything about that rifle but I can offer some advice about posting active auctions on gun boards.

Keep in mind that many people puruse sites like this that aren't members.

By posting an active auction, you possibly give a "heads up" to somebody that will then start bidding on the rifle and thus, run the price up. In other words, you shoot yourself in the foot.

So, you might want to delete that link.... and just describe the rifle in detail.

Even posting the picture allows people to check the properties which shows that its a gun broker auction and then they go and do a search...

I've seen many a post of the member complaining that somebody "steeling" a good deal off of an auction that they posted - and then posting the results on another board! I say - don't give them the chance....

Nice looking rifle, but the 32 S&W Long wasn't brought out until 1896, I believe, and they place the rifle date at 1890. If that's correct, it would have to have been rechambered at some point, which would make it a good candidate for further rechambering to 32 H&R magnum.

Nix on the 32 magnum! The Ballard action is a LOW pressure action. They are cast iron construction and the design isn't made for pressures over that of factory black powder. I won't do one in anything but low pressure rounds.

Thanks for posting that good advice and looking out for my feet. However, my feet are fine. I'm not interested in the auction, just the knowledge and information about a rifle I wasn't familiar with.
