Politics? - Gun Laws from the WTH?!?! files...

Post by Old Ironsights »

Not only is Indiana a "shall issue" State, it is, in all practical respects, a "Must Have " State... The only exceptions are in your home/business and on your property.

And though Indiana honors all permits from all States, Vermonters (for example) are prohibited from Hunting, Target shooting, OR PERSONAL PROTECTION CCW with handguns in Indiana because they don't have a permit... despite the fact that their State doesn't issue one. (Never mind all the folks from "May" or "No" issue States...)

Indiana Firearms Regulations

No license is required to possess a rifle, shotgun or muzzle-loading firearm (including muzzleloading handguns). You must have a permit to carry and/or hunt with a handgun. Landowners may hunt on their own property without a handgun permit. It is legal to carry a concealed handgun while hunting, if you possess a personal protection permit. You may apply for a handgun permit at your local county sheriff’s office. You must be at least 18 years old to obtain a handgun permit.

Non-residents using a handgun must have a permit issued by their home state. If their home state does not issue handgun permits, they may not hunt with a handgun in Indiana.
For a complete listing of Indiana firearm regulations, see Indiana Code 35-47-2-1.
Makes me think wonder exactly how "gun friendly" we really are here... :?

It "only" affects handguns.

I guess that when it comes to handguns there is no presumption of innocence. You must PROVE you are "worthy" to carry/use one here...

And yeah... barring some rapid political work and a change to the Indiana Statutes, any event that may eventually happen would be impacted if LEO decided to spot check. No Permit, no Handgun.

Perhaps I don't read well, or maybe I missed something, but what you've provided as a guideline seems to apply only to carry and or hunting.

I'll have to take your word on the requirements for possession in relation to practice and target shooting type activities, but I'm not getting the sense that any sort of licensing or FOID is required to drive one around in the trunk of your car to go to or practice at the range.

Am I misunderstanding the issue?

:?:
Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

I spent a good bit of time discussing this with the head of LE for DNR here. It applies to any carry/use of handguns (other than interstate travel) anywhere other than your personal residence, business or property. This includes target shooting on any Public Range.

Believe it or not, there are actually 2 classes of permit here. "Personal Protection" (or "universal") and "Hunting/Target Shooting". Someone with a "HTS" permit is not allowed to carry a handgun anywhere except at a Public Range or while Hunting, and without a PP or HTS you are in violation of der law if you pull a .22 pistol out of the trunk at a public range and start banging away... regardless of whatever else you had been legally shooting.

I'm not absolutely certain how this applies to Private Clubes where you are amember, but it still applies to non-members regardless.

I'm just getting into this one, but so far it seems to have been, until recently, one of those things that nobody, including Field Officers, paid any attention to... untill somebody from Illannoy raised the question to some LEO Suit in Indy.
