Last week Ricky and I went to the ranch to hunt two Scimitar Horned Oryx. We saw the one I wanted to take twice, but trying to be a good host I let Ricky shoot one first. I never got one that trip. I went to the ranch again and on my Birthday, Richard and I hunted for the Scimitar. 5 hours later we had just about given up. We saw a lot of animals on the ranch and 22 scimitar but not the one I wanted. The scimitar I was trying to get was very skinny and obviously sick so it needed to be taken out of the herd. We left the ranch to get the ingredients for a Birthday dinner. After prepping the food, we made one last search for the Scimitar. Just as we started heading back to begin grilling duties there it was crossing with a few other oryx. I tried to get the sights on it a few times but there was brush and they were moving. One of them in the middle busted us and they all started running, quartering away hard. As this one, that I had nicknamed "Spare Rib" crossed a little opening I swung the Sav 99 through the opening and fired. The 165 gr Nosler Partition from the 308 cartridge found its mark and the oryx crumbled. The bullet hit the front of the left hip, pierced the spleen, kidneys and right lung, nicked the spine and came to rest behind the right shoulder. The front was gone but from the partition back was a typical mushroom that weights 106 grs. I got my Scimitar and I had my cake and ate it too!
That's an amazing animal. I read that they're considered critically endangered in their homeland of North Africa but thriving in Texas. This species long term survival is largely due to hunters like yourself you are willing to pay for hunting privileges. Thank you for participating in saving this species from extinction!
Two questions:
- How much did this animal weigh? (approx)
- How is the meat compared to other game?

Fire Up the Grill - Hunting is NOT Catch & Release!
These animals are the best meat of any antelope species. They typically weigh around 400 pounds but this one was excessively skinny at only 300 pounds.
Nice to see that Savage 99 doing what it was meant to do. From time to time, an old Savage or two comes available at the local shooting supplies, and I've looked at them, but a fellow can only afford so many guns. However, I still very much enjoy hunting photos and stories in which they play a part. Thanks for posting.

Not to mention the Indian Blackbuck Antelope also critically endangered in it's home range of Pakistan and NW India, plenty in Texas though thanks to people like Joe & Richard. I still get pleasure chewing on Blackbuck Antelope steak knowing it's rare meat in more ways than one. Thanks again Joe.
Happy Birthday Joe. Ganjiro beat me to it, that does almost look like a smile. I always knew there was one in there somewhere. You always look like your staring down a mope when you get your pic taken.
