Glad the forum is back up!

Post by Bill in Oregon »

After weeks of running smoothly, the forum was running a little slow yesterday, and I couldn't bring it up at all today until now. These service issues seem worse on weekends for some reason.

+1. Although I didn't have any problems yesterday... today, just now got access. I think it has to do with too many trying to get on at the same time... Or the paranoid me, thinks I've been banned! :P :P

Griff, why would anyone on this forum ban you? I put up a post about rescuing a juvenile orphaned bat. No ban.
Others put up posts about topics that sometimes only get 1 or 2 replies. No ban.
I have seen topics locked. No ban. Topics removed. No ban.

The moderators seem to accept that we are human, and sometimes need re-directed. Unless you are doing something which would be totally out of character, I do not believe that you will be banned. Keep participating.

Didn't you get the PM about the vote? Just kidding. I wasn't sure it was my connection or the site, but I couldn't get on a couple time yesterday and couldn't get on this morning.

Last two days it wouldn't work at all for me in the mornings. Today and yesterday it worked later, but both days I had to log back in to get online.

Down this morning for me, too.
By the way, the value of these threads to me is not in whining but in providing data points for the webmaster or administrator. I assume someone behind the scenes finds them useful or at least corroborative.

When down I would email Andy, with his Dad being ill recently I haven't wanted to bother him with it.
I figure since I'm probably one of the first guys to check in in the mornings ( being on the east coast) I could send the email. Then I realized Andy is a couple time zones away but he would know.

Was finally able to log on today after after numerous unsuccessful attempts in the morning and early afternoon.

Believe the last time I was able to log on w/o any issues(s) was Tues, 6/30 or Weds 7/1.

I was able to log on yesterday (7/4) early afternoon. Could not log on last night or earlier this morning.

About noon today (7/5) I was unable to post this response – “service unavailable.”

Computer identified problems: 503 error, site could not be reached ", "site timed out," or "service unavailable.

It's been very slow to load, if at all.
Now it seems that I can only look at one or two topics and it locks up. I have to close the forum then open it to look at the next topic.
It's strange ...

Seems like it is good a day or two, then doesn't open at all for a day or two. Then after it works again I need to login before I can post. Sure getting old this constant off/on thing.

Seems to only work reliably when there are very few folks on line. And I've noticed usage is way down. I suspect some folks are getting frustrated and moving away. Hosting service doesn't care, they get paid either way. And they are the ones who control how much bandwidth any given site gets.

I havent seen any specific information about how they are fixing or dealing with the outages here, other forums have discussed it some. The cloudflare human confirmation seems to be one of the simpler ways, though many hate it, which is understandable. Something that we need to consider, and been brought up by those much smarter about web stuff than I, this isnt something thats likely to go away, its part of the landscape now. the good old days of the carefree free internet are passing. The massive amounts of AI bots that are clogging up so many sites is likely the problem. They train their systems on the free stuff, to include copyright protected information, and it overwhelms the sites ability to handle the traffic, denying access to the normal users. Google and other search engines send bots out all the time for info, thats how you can find things when you search, but the AI tidal wave of bots is a much more significant issue. Some are calling this "the ensh!tification of the internet", others alluding to it being the beginning of the death of the internet as we have known it for the past couple decades or so.

The castboolit site has made any use, even just looking, you have to log in. The practical effect is that the vast pool of knowledge built up over time isnt accessible any longer. It used to be one of the best sources of hands on load and specific mold number cast bullet information, now I cant find much of anything, even if logged in there and doing internal searches. Many things ives searched recently with google or duck duck go has been a complete bust for useful information. Im back to looking in old loading manuals for things that used to have tons of useful info easily available online. What was the factory velocity of 45-90, black, and WHV smokeless loads? Who knows, the searches arent turning anything useful up. Not even a wikipedia page on the specific cartridge, just 45-90 sharps, which isnt the same at all. Im having much more trouble finding specific info on this forum with google searches, things i know I used to be able to find easily, and there used to be a list of similar results specific to this site, and are often lacking now.

This all is only the beginning Im afraid. Buckle up.

I'm on the Castboolit forum every day, and only logged in once. I never log out so I open it and no issues about logging in or doing anything before looking around or posting.

The point wasnt about being able to stay logged in there, the point was when they went to log in only to see anything, the vast amount of reference material became unable to be searched. Even when logged in Ive been unable to find things in internal searches of the site, I know Ive found in the past easily.

Example, I was looking for 45 colt 300 gr cast 18.5 grs 2400 velocity in a carbine or rifle, and chamber pressure. I know Ive found that info there in the past, and absolute tons of other info, often exact mold number bullets and various load info for them, now......crickets.....nothing in searches whatsoever. Edit: Just logged in castboolits and did a few searches, its an exercise in frustration trying to find specific information.

Cast Boolits site elected to use log in only instead of the cloud flare check system, it works for that purpose, to keep bots from overloading it, it just locked up huge amounts of info that used to be searchable and accessible. I joined there because they had the most information whenever i searched stuff.

A side point, I never log in anywhere unless intending to post, or things I want to see are members only. I clear history and cookies every day. Computer repair people told me years ago it helps reduce computers getting loaded up and slow, and helps in some security matters, so Ive just done it for ages.

I've been watching the "who's on line" at the bottom of the page. It's usually two or three bots, and maybe ten to twelve registered users/guests. Now what's interesting is that the bots are listed as registered users. Seems to me if a bot shows up as "registered", they could be killed pretty easy.

Regardless, this amount of users on line is extremely, and I mean extremely, light for a website. What got me to looking is that I would get a message that the website was essentially overwhelmed with users. Just one more bit of evidence that the host company is controlling the traffic in favor of other forums. Perhaps those that have more ads?
