my GGGGgrandfather arrived in new york harbor. he was a 21 year old Hessian mercenary in the service of king george. december 26th of that year, he was captured when Washington crossed the delaware and essentially destroyed the Hessian garrison.

my ancestor, Casper Goebel, is number 37 on the prisoner list. less than a year later, he became a Blue coat and served as a Continental soldier through the war until its end.

in 1799 he 'anglicized' his surname to Cable. by all accounts he was a humorous and kind man, and quite successful here in his chosen country.
