Great find and great deal.
My gunsmith friend gave me a great tip on a local Winchester Model 1894 rifle in 38-55 that was for sale. It's the standard rifle with 26" barrel, full mag tube, original sights and crescent buttplate. Action is tight. No extra holes in receiver or wood. Bore is nice and receiver shiny(rifle was made in 1904). The wood was refinished at some point long ago but looks nice. OK, drumroll........... I got it for $850! I think that is a pretty good deal. What do you think?
Now I've got to take it out and shoot it once I get some ammo. Winchester makes 255 grain SP, but aren't there some manufacturers who make loaded ammo with lead bullets? I think I'd like to go that route so as to preserve the bore. Thanks for reading and good shootin'.

Oh, I forgot to say that.... I DON"T KNOW HOW TO TAKE AND POST PICTURES!!!! Sorry, but I think my mentality is in lock step with the year(1904) that rifle rolled off the assembly line.
Any ideas as to getting loaded ammo with lead bullets??? That would be mighty kind of yins (regional Pennsylvania slang).

Congrats Kaschi! I'd say ya done good. If you've got even a smidge of mechanical ability and a decent attention span, I would think of a simple, bare bones reloading setup. That way, you can tailor your bullets to the size of the bore and tweak all the little variables that will make it shoot good. Then again, you might just find an already loaded ammo that shoots good in it...couldn't tell ya. Never hurts to try. I've never bought 38/55 ammo but pretty sure there are both heavy and light cast loads out there in ready made form. Give us a range report when you can and congrats again.

This is why you will probably want to go with a reloading set up!

+1 - That's almost criminal cruelty not to post a photo with such a great find!Tycer wrote:Yippee!!!

Congrats!! It sounds like a good deal to me.
I've used Ultramax cowboy loads in mine, but it shoots pretty dirty, and I haven't seen it around in a while.
Besides the other recommendations above, there are several custom ammo makers that may be a bit less expensive. Here are two I've used, but I'm sure there are many more:

Good luck and have fun!

Thanks for the tips on the loaded ammo. Yeah, I know I gotta get into the reloading scene. My cousin gave me his RCBS press so there is no excuse at this point. I'll have to get my wife to take a couple of pics of the 38-55 for you to see. Please be patient though, it might take a couple of days.
