Q. -"You were a soldier during the war. Did you kill anybody?"

A. -"Well, I was the company cook so...yes, I probably did."

I wasn't a cook, but the guys on my ship hated me after my 1st day on board ship and were none to reluctant to tell me so. At 0800 I was do take over as the duty Supply Officer, in charge of supply, laundry, & galley. It was a Sunday morning. I got up with the duty cook at 0600 & took one look at the two big coffee urns and noted the black bakelite spout & handle wore a greenish fuzz. By 0700 I had the scullery workers dismantle 'em and cleaned until they gleamed... EVERYONE told me that I personally ruined the taste of the coffee.

Funny, as I ran a small coffee & donut shop in the School of Business at UMass Amherst back in the early 80's. Every time we "cleaned the pots" until they shined, the coffee would taste pretty bad/bitter until the grunge reappeared. After a couple of cycles of that after I tool over operations, I skipped the Weekly Cleaning Protocol and only did it at the end of the semester, and then we'd run & dump a couple of pots at start-up for the next semester. That saved us some $$ and was better for the coffee lovers.
