Some of the best moments ever written and filmed in the history of cinema: Charles Laughton in "Ruggles of Red Gap," 1935, reciting Lincoln's Gettysburg address. Doesn't matter if your folks were Yankee or Secesh. Mine were both, equally.
These are words for all places and all time.

The Gettysburg Address was a divinely inspired speech. One Great Grandfather was a Sergeant under Myles Keough, who was under George Custer. I do not have proof of others serving, anthough a Great Great Grandfather was a friend of Frank and Jesse James.

"Ruggles of Red Gap" was my maternal grandfather's favorite movie. In the early 90's I found it on VHS, and bought it for him. You'd think I had given him a gold bar. He actually wrote me a thank you letter. My grandmother told me to hold onto it tight, as he seldom wrote personal letters.
I now have the movie in digital format. I need it watch it again - it's been some time.

Jay, I read that Leo McCarey took a day and a half to shoot this scene because every time Laughton started the Gettysburg Address, he could not keep from crying, moved by those tremendous words. Part of the solution was to place a camera just behind Laughton to focus on the faces of the bar patrons hearing Lincoln's address. Chokes me up just thinking about it.
