Marlin 336 stock swap?

Would the walnut stock and forearm from an old 1966 Marlin fit on a new model 336W? I have thought of dressing up the new rifle a little...

It will fit, but could be a somewhat poor fit at the tang. Or, it could be a perfect fit. I have had it work both ways.
