Sneaky Midway USA

Post by Bill in Oregon »

I've ordered a lot from Potterfield's outfit over the years -- probably enough to pay for a safari for him and from Amazon for Jeff Bezos too!
But on a recent small order, they snuck in "Extended protection," for an extra $3.46. I didn't see it because I wasn't looking for it as it had never been there before. Soooo, if you order from Midway be aware that they are "piling on" a fee without telling you until after the order is processed.

What does this "extended protection" give you Bill? Is it like shipping insurance, a longer warranty, or ????

Yes Bill, I just got hit by that too! Although the way shipping is nowadays if my 1k of Federal LRP magnum primers went missing I might have a leg to stand on.

What really bothers me about Midway is 10 minutes after ordering they email you saying your order has shipped. Then the order sits in limbo a couple days before it starts moving. I'd much prefer an email when the order is actually on its way.

I had a college buddy and his wife working there for a few years. He did production for the videos Potterfield made and his wife did PR stuff being a past Olympian.

Extended offers "support" and hand-holding if your order goes "agley" apparently. I've never had a Midway order go missing. And who needs insurance on bullets and brass? It's not like they will break in transit. :x

So you contract to a supplier to deliver the goods you order. How he delivers them is up to him. And he is responsible for the items until they are physically in your hands (not just tossed in the front yard). But to insure that the people the supplier contracts with does their job they want you to pay extra. That alone speaks volumes as to the quality of the supplier.

Example. I ordered some accessories for a Teeter inversion table. They shipped it out next day. The box arrived open and the products missing (obviously since it was in the hands of the USPS the entire time someone in that organization opened the box and took the contents). I called the supplier. They sent out a replacement the next day. That's the way it should be. Teeter is a family owned business that prides itself on their reputation for doing things right.

I have had companies that failed to deliver merchandise, whether it was stolen in transport or was never shipped didn't matter. I paid and didn't receive it. I simple clawed back the payment to the supplier. And I, every time, file a report with their states fraud department.

Related to this...

Several guns shops in this area told me they're now paying an extra +5% fee on top of quoted shipping charges for all inbound freight.

Said one guy... "Funny how they told me their 'pricing had not changed', but the amount I'm paying sure has... I guess they don't consider added fees as being part of their pricing!" He was pretty pi**ed about it, but there's not much he could do for goods he needs to ship into his store.

They just stole the way the government of my state has been doing business for decades. The citizens passed a law reducing property tax and restricting the rate that it can rise annually. So the state just started adding "fees". There is a movement brewing to do the same thing with fees. Especially when one considers how wasteful the state government is. And it's not just conservatives that are joining. The problem is the ratio of renters to property owners has changed since the 1970's. And the politicians are pretty good at the divide and conquer routine.

Yep, must be catching, I ordered some parts from Henry Outfitters, which I assume is Henry's parts and accessories arm as it connects through the Henry Firearms site and they tried to add in a similar charge basically calling it shipping insurance.
