Winchester model 65

Post by Malamute »

A friend had his Dad give him a Winchester model 65 in 32 WCF (32-20) cal. He's curious as to what year it was likely made, and what it's value is. He doesn't want to sell it, but was wanting to know what they are worth. It's in perhaps 85-90% + condition, and is in the 10,000+ serial range(oops, make that 1,000,000 serial range  ). The Winchester Book shows it as being in the war period years, 41 to 47, but I didnt know if anyone knew closer than that. He sent me some pics, but I haven't yet transfered them to a venue that I can post them from.

Thanks for any info.

Isnt it amazing how many people post without reading the thread?

Malamute: Wasn't the Model 65 only made in 218 Bee? Maybe I'm mistaken on that one.

Malamute, tell your friend to go to Savage99.com & look for the Dates of Manufacture section; select the mfg'r; plug in the serial # & it'll give him the date. jd45

the model 65 was made in 218 bee ,25-20,32-20. made from 1933 to 1947 when it was discontinued. a total of 5704 were produced. this info from midas, the winchester book, page 393.
verry collectable, but i have no idea of $$$ value. some were made with a bolt peep. these are rare. had a neighbor in the 1960's who had one in 25-20. he bought it new. it was the first m-65 i ever saw or heard of. since then i have seen less than a dozen. hope this helps.

Malamute, I just bagged a Winchester 65 in 32-20 at the Kull & Supica auction over a month ago. Still awaiting its arrival (it takes a while to get the US export permit). As for when it was made, Dave Kennedy on the Winchester Collector's forum, is a curator at Cody. He has the polishing room records, which are currently not yet published. The polishing room records give the date that the receiver was serialized, which typically are within a week or two of the date the completed rifle was received in warehouse. These polishing records give information on a lot of Winchesters for which there are no factory records anymore. He has been very helpful to me and others on the board in giving us the polishing room date for Winchesters for which there are no longer any factory records. If you can give me the serial number, as close as you can, I'll ask him for the dates for both your friend's rifle and mine.

Thatr would have to be a real early 65 if it is in the million serial range as 94# On Million was given to the president in 1927 if memory serves and as far as I know the 65 was the same serial range as the 94?

Yep, my mistake! I just looked it up and it was indeed made in 25-20 and 32-20 as well. Sorry!

I've posted the question for the curator at the Cody museum, so we should have an answer by tomorrow. The Model 65 is a beautiful little rifle based on the Model 1892/92 action. I just spoke with the US exporter. She says she's got the export permit and just needs US customs to do their thing. She says it will likely ship next week. Whoo-hooo! When I get it, I'll make a desktop photo of it and post it here, so y'all can enjoy what an original Winchester Model 65 in 32 WCF looks like. Until then, here's an auction photo so you can at least get a general idea of what one looks like. It's listed as having a 22" barrel ... a beautiful, light little rifle.

It was numbered in sequence with the Model 1892, produced from 1933 to 1947 according to Madis in "The Winchester Book".

Kirk that is a beautiful rifle, real proud for you. The groundhogs and crows better be real careful now.
We just got home and I read your email on the load work. I reckon that I'll give the bore another good scrubbing with the 0000 steel wool and see if that helps.

thank's, Jerry

Unfortunately, both my serial number and Malamute's friend's serial number are outside of the range covered on that sight. I got a reply from the curator. He's away from the museum until Monday. He thinks, however, that the polishing room records for our range of serial numbers has been lost, but he said he'd check for sure on Monday.
