In some parts of the country, the leaves fall in autumn.

Post by Scott Tschirhart »

Here, they fell yesterday. Somehow these oaks are all on the same timer. The battle to pick them up begins!

Leaf blowers work well. Blow all the leaves onto your neighbor's yard and you don't even have to pick them up.

Here in the country we let the wind take care of them.
Well ... the one's close to the house get raked into piles and I mulch them with the mower, blow the fragments around the yard and never see them again.

I got rid of the oak trees in my yard, forty+ years after planting them. What a relief! Oaks give you shade in the winter and drop leaves all year round.

I can't grasp leaves falling this time of year! Here, its like clockwork (God's is Faithful in all things)! Leaves actually stsrt changing slightly by mid Sept, on some types trees anyways, Buckeye one first. Then its a slow process thru early Oct. Then it kicks into high gear. Peak of fall colors of most always centered aprox Oct 22-24, then usually? a frost turns them mostly brown overnight, and they're mostly fallen by first week of Nov. The oaks are last to hold on, mostly!
All this in eyes of a squirrel hunter dictate how you them, and where to focus your hunting! And my mind automatically switches to deer hunting during that last week of Oct! God is live that time of year! By Thanksgiving its as if all that wildlife that was alive n working in late Oct, is almost vanished it seems by late Nov!
Where i live now, they're steep ridges on north north south. Winds are strong out the east n west. Bunch big oaks on east end my place. I learned first year, dont bother raking. Had it clean, then one the big fronts came in, strong wind out east, my place was covered with leaves. Now, I let wind have em, rake out a few corners, eventually wind takes on for most part! I sure like it better this way, cause I've lived were raking was needed yearly. Now, by grass mowing time, only few little spots i rake before I mow! Im spoiled here!

Here I'm surrounded by hardwoods, white, red, black, pin and chestnut oaks, beech, maples, ash ( all dead now) plus others. I love my trees but I really hate leaves!

A buddy of mine is a forester, he says the trees that hold their leaves all winter are male trees. I don't know if true or not, never bothered to find out.

Now I can’t do that to my neighbors.

We are surrounded by big woods here .The maples start coming down in October and the Oaks a few weeks later. last year the oaks weren't done till late November. If We don't rake them and they get wet or it snows on them there is a real mess to deal with. After 30+ years of a rake and a tarp ten years ago I bought a Cyclone rake that attaches to my zero turn mower. It is now easy to keep up with them as they come down and it does a days work in an hour. At 72 it takes a huge load off Me.
