OT-X at the end of a Winchester Model 12 serial number?

Post by rangerider7 »

Does anyone know the significance of an X at the end of a model 12 serial number. The shotgun in question is a 1953 trap gun and has a "Harry Moneymaker" rib on it with deluxe wood. I was wondering if it was done by Winchester when the former owner requested a Moneymaker rib and was sent back to Winchester or what? I used to shoot trap and skeet years ago but was not familiar with the X on these custom Model 12s. Thanks!

I just read that Winchester's standard practice was to put an X at the end of a serial number to show that it was a duplicate. Anyone heard of this before?

Yes I have seen a 2 barrel set made up (by Win.??) with one barrel with the X behind the #. Is the X on both the receiver and barrel extension? :D

Levergunner... Awhile back I called Cody and according to the curator of the Winchester museum there an "X" following a serial number on a Model 64 means a duplicate serial number was struck. I would assume it means the same on a Model 12...but then again maybe it means your 12 is "X-rated" and meant for Royalty!!!! :D :D :D

Okay maybe I'm not getting it, why would they strike a duplicate serial number? Is it for an extra barrel set or what or did someone make a mistake at the factory? :?:
