It was a Savage deer season

Post by FLINT »

Deer season ended last saturday and wanted to share my success this year as it involved some cool leverguns.

first buck was killed on public land. national forest, wilderness area, over 3 miles in from the road at 4000' elevation. Not a big buck, but a feat to accomplish all the same. Been wanting to hunt up there for years and finally went for it. About killed me packing this thing out so I'm glad he didn't weigh one pound more. Hopefully my resulting injuries will heal. I guess I'm not 25 any more.

Image

Shot him with my 1952 Savage 99 in 300 savage using factory remington 150 gr. core lokts. Bullet hit and smashed the upper leg bone, went through the heart and then through the opposite shoulder and stopped under the skin. When I dressed him out I was pulling out finger sized bone fragments out of the chest cavity. That front leg/shoulder was obliterated.

Second deer was on private land. Wanted one more deer for the freezer and an adult doe finally obliged 10 minutes before final shooting light on the last Friday of season.

Shot her with my 1952 Savage 99 in 250-3000 savage using handloaded 87 gr. speer hot core over 3031 powder. I was a little nervous about deer hunting with this rifle because I'm not used to using such tiny bullets and was worried about lack of penetration. However the bullet passed straight through her and made a bigger hole going out than going in. All my other guns start at 30 cal and go up, so I'm not used to seeing such a tiny .25 cal hole. It worked well. Did a ton of damage in the chest cavity. I was in a rush to dress her out as it was dark, and thankfully had help coming to drag, so I didn't have time to inspect, but did notice that the liver was tore up pretty bad because I was hoping to keep the liver to eat, but it was a mess so I ditched it.

So, in terms of guns, this season ended up being pretty cool as I got one deer each with my pair of 99s. I love these guns and love the old weaver scopes on them (2.5x on the 300 and 3x on the 250). I'm probably going to post a new topic soon to discuss options for levergun scopes for some of my other rifles.

Congratulations on your deer, Flint! I hope it was downhill getting that buck out! Those are some nice Savage 99's you have and a good write up.

Thanks,

Well done! 3 miles is a long drag! You should have set up camp and eaten him then walked out :D
An 87gr bullet wouldn't have been my first choice BUT it worked, it will continue to work too.
I would like1 more for my freezer as well, I'm just not that motivated to get out there. We still a good month for our season here.

GREAT JOB!! As you demonstrated, caliber alone is not "THE" answer. The right bullet in the right place will do the job.

Very nice ! I’ve not fired at a deer since the first day of gun season 11/15/25 but we have antlerless season in my county until 3/30/26 . Attached are a couple pictures of the buck I killed 11/15/25 using a Mannlicher Schoenauer MCA in 6.5x54 MS shooting Handloaded Hornady 123 SST at 65ish yards at the crack of the gun he was DRT !

Killed this guy at 23 yards on 10/11/25 using my Ravin R9 crossbow shooting Muzzy 100 grain broadheads he ran about thirtyfive yards after the shot . This deer was in full velvet but his antlers were hard as a rock . He also had very tiny testicles so I’m assuming he was in some sort of accident a year or so ago .

Great Job with some beautiful rifles! A 99 in 300 Savage jyst spells Deer! But 6pts MS 6.5x54ms just about drives me crazy with lust!

I’ve got my eye on a Mannlicher Schoenauer MC Premier in 280 REM I’d like to have but it’s way over my pay grade . I’ve had quite a bit of experience with 280’s so this would fall in my wheelhouse except for the price .

Nope! Unfortunately it wasn't all downhill!

way too far and hard to drag. Had to butcher it on site and pack it out. took two trips as I only had a daypack.

My 250 savage is an older model with the 1 in 14 twist rate so to save time and frustration, I just stuck with the 87 grain bullet when I was working up a load for it. The first load I tried with 3031 hit 3000 fps and is accurate. Also, the Speer Hot Cor bullet is not a varmint bullet like the 87 gr. sierra and seems to hold up ok on deer.

Dang man, those are some great bucks!. Sounds like you had the most efficient hunting season ever. Pretty much the opposite of me. Good for you! I never saw a buck older than 2.5 years all season this year.

Yeah, I just can't imagine a better deer rifle than the 99 in 300 savage. At least for the kind of hunting I do. I would never need "more gun" than that. super accurate. has a lever (essential requirement). 2.5x post reticle scope.
