This Bear broke into my gun-safe, and . . . . .

.
If I were this homeowner, I think there would be an unfortunate accident (and maybe some bear-steak later)...

Time for a full magazine accidental discharge or two.
We have lots of bears here, for years the F&G have been trapping and relocating the bears . That just moves to problems to a different town. The townsfolk cant walk their dogs, let kids play outside, garbage cans tossed. They have taken to gut shooting the bears so they go away and die. Sad but true.

I guess that makes sense - if they make a humane shot and the bear dies quickly on the premises, they would likely be charged with a crime, but if the bear wanders off and dies elsewhere from a 22 LR that perforated the GI tract, the homeowner would be hard to implicate.
Truly sad that the bears don't get a better deal. Either relocate them to a true wilderness area, and if they overpopulate there, increase hunting tags, OR allow the locals to harvest them when they are a nuisance.

Here they are out of wilderness, too many condos and developments.
Not only are we over populated but a new pending record bear was shot this past fall, over 700lbs!
Our season is 2 weeks in October, a week for bow only and bow/muzzleloader the other week. Then a week in December, not the ideal time to hunt bears.
You can shoot either sex but it must be 75lbs and up. Can you tell if a bear is 60lbs or 75lbs?
These bears are mostly garbage eaters so I wouldn't want to shoot a big bear for the table. Seems they really like dirty diapers!

Frankly I think the homeowner just wants attention. The bear is coming out nightly. After it does, get a bunch of folks to make noise as they block the hole. When the bear finds the entrance blocked, and too much noise and distraction to work on getting it open (though done properly he won't be able to) he'll move on. And that's not even mentioning trapping or darting the thing.

Maybe I should offer the Altadena folks the use of my 45-70. Problem solved.

While there are ways the home owner could make the bear decide to move, these days most people are re-educated to believe that "someone else" is supposed to take care of it. Being self-reliant is no longer an American trait. At least not for a lot of people.

What about a bunch of dried cayenne pepper powder? Use a leaf blower to blow the crawlspace full of pepper powder. Hopefully the bear is not cajun.

Just one more reason that I wouldn't live in California if they gave me half of the state...

Trust me, we wouldn't want you here. We have enough issues as it is. In fact we are so aware of our issues we don't need outsiders commenting on them.

I was visiting a friends fathers cabin in upstate New York and when I opened the pantry door I noticed it had a dead bolt and was metal sheathed on the pantry side.
The window sill had claw marks inside and out on the porch side. When I asked my friend she said with a straight face it was going fine until that bear ate my Dads Oreos and that's when the 30-30 came into play!!
