99 savage barrel lapping

Post by zephaniah »

I have a 1917 250-3000 takedown that has a pretty fair bore. A little dark and a little pitted. Was wondering has anyone done barrel lapping to correct this and how aggressive. Any help would be appreciated.

Kindest regards and Merry Christmas,

Zeph

Before anything. Shoot it for groups. It may look like garbage and shoot like a diamond. A little trigger time might bring it around also. You can always lap it if all else fails.

I'm in the shoot it first camp. I once had two 1917 Enfields, one an Ogden rebuild with a bright and shiny Winchester barrel, the other an all-matching 1918 Eddystone with a dark bore. There wasn't an inch of difference between them at 100 yards.

I might try hand lapping with a tight patch and JB Bore Paste for appearance sake, probably make it easier to clean as well.

Shoot it before doing anything.
If not happy then try JB Bore paste.
Shoot it again.
Still not happy then get some very fine valve lapping compound, roll some bullets in the compound between 2 steel plates, load and shoot those.
After that you are on your own :D

Fire lapping is the easier way . Pouring a lead slug of the barrel is how factory laps them. You can get the fire lap kit for sale.
