How History Is Forgotten

Post by jeepnik »

It is Sunday December 7th. Right down the street is the USS Iowa. She is the lead ship in the Iowa class battleships. And as such the only one to serve in WWII. You'd think some mention of this historic date might be made. Not a peep. Not a single bugle blown for all those that died.

And folks wonder why kids have no idea of this country's history.

When I arrived at church this morning the flag was at full staff. I promptly (and correctly) lowered it to half staff.

It was indeed way to quiet on the topic today. We should never forget.

I don't watch broadcast TV or listen to the radio, so had no clue it received virtually no coverage. I woke up this morning, and said my usual prayers with the addition of a homage to those that died this anniversary of that attack and for my late B-I-L who was born this date in 1953.

I remembered it, my father and all of my uncles and other kin were involved in it overseas. I still have all the pictures.

December 7 is my mothers birthday- but 1942, not 1941

She turned 83 yesterday and she is still a feisty pain in the butt ---- i brought her a carafe of homemade skinny margaritas and some hay for her donkeys for her birthday and it was a good day

But yes -- December 7 will be always etched in my memory for multiple reasons

.
One of my kids was born on Pearl Harbor Day, so our family has a built-in reminder, even though only a couple are alive who were alive at the time.

Not that many of 'us' are around who remember the Challenger Explosion, for that matter.

Think of it - the same is true for a huge part of the population in relation to Twin Towers Day; even my own kids were too young at the time to remember much.

Many yeara ago my history teacher said:

Without knowing HISTORY we have no 'map' of the world to give us perspective to see where we can go (or should avoid).
Without having a religious FAITH we have no 'compass' to help guide us on our journey.

(...sadly, these days the mention of 'faith' would get her fired... :| )
