Range Day Update (with pix)

Post by cnjarvis »

Range Day tomorrow!

I’m taking my Win M70 in 300 WM and my Win M94 in 30-30 to try out some loads.

This will be the first time I’ve fired the M70 since I bought it 2 years ago. I know it’s a CRIME to let it sit that long but I did not have a scope for it until about 3 weekends ago. I had gone into Sportsman’s Warehouse looking for a Burris 3-9x40 Fullfield II in matte black. They didn’t have one however one of the guys at the gun counter chimed in and said that he had one in like new condition that he’d sell me… for $100. SOLD!

Anyway, this is the first chance I’ve had to get to the range to do some shooting.

For the 300 WM I have:

165 gr. Federal Fusion factory loads
165 gr. Sierra BTHP’s over AA3100
200 gr. Sierra BTSP over 65 gr. AA3100

For the 30-30 I have:

150 gr. Speer FP over 33 gr. RL 15
150 gr. Winchesters over 34.5 gr. W748
170 gr. Sierra FP over 32 gr. W748

I’ll let y’all know how they shoot. I can barely wait.

Last Friday I took the guns and the kiddo to the range to do a little shooting. My daughter got to shoot a couple of 22 rifles while I spent some time checking out some loads and sighting in the 300 Win. Mag. We had a good time but shooting conditions were NOT ideal. 93° with winds at 15-20 mph. Groups were not as good as I had hoped and I didn't have time to allow the barrels to cool as much as I would have liked between shots.

The results:

In the 30-30 the 150 gr. Win. Power Point shows some promise so I'll keep working with that one as well as the 170 gr. Sierra. I'm also going to shoot the 200 gr. Sierras again in the 300WM when I have time to let the barrel cool more and when the wind isn't so bad.

I also lost 3 cases in the 300WM. No signs of pressure on any case fired.

A bright note: I had the opportunity to shoot a 95% BB94 in 375 Win. Now I want one.

Coachise has one for sale in the classifieds. I'd love to pick it up, but financially it's not a good time.
