Playing With The .41 Magnum

Post by JimT »

Recently I have been casting bullets and part of what I did was run off some 230 gr. flat-nose bullets for the .41 Magnum. The mold is an old NEI mold that has served me well for many years.

I had not shot my .41 in some time and I wanted a mid-range load to practice with so I loaded up several hundred with 8.0 gr. of Unique. Turns out this is a fun load.

Jim this thread reminds me that I need to track down some large pistol primers and get my lead pot fired up and pour some 41s!

It is a puzzle to me as to why the .41 Mag did not become more popular. Just the same way that other cartridges can be loaded hot or mild, it can be, too. Plenty of power for anything that most will ever need. It is sort of a good middle step from .357 to .44 Mag. No, I don't have one. That needs to be fixed, but not right now.

Jim you are making me itch!

I have a .41 that Bowen built on a .357 frame Old Model that I really haven’t messed with.

I have not chrono'd the 8 gr. of Unique load. My old chrono died and I have not replaced it. Not sure I will. My standard load with the 210 gr. XTP runs about 1450.

I have half a dozen ,41 mags, half Smiths and half Rugers. My favorite load is 17.5 gr of AA9 behind either a Hornady XTP 210 grain JHP or an RCBS 215 gr cast plain base bullet. They both shoot great in my guns and that cast bullet doesn't lead at all.

My Garmin chronograph says my cast load flies at 1440 fps out of a no dash 6" model 57, at 1350 fps out of a 4" 657. Brian Pearce has mentioned a load he uses with 19.5 gr of AA9 behind the 210 gr XTP.
