Question for the old Marlin experts

Post by Killer Kanuck »

Or the young Marlin experts :D

Just looking for someone to confirm my suspicions that this is an aftermarket drill and tap of an older 1893 (hence the centered `Marlin Safety`) and not some some odd unknown to me factory tap.

I don`t know the serial number yet (asked the prospective seller for it this evening via email) so I can`t confirm age.

IMHO, any D/T'd M1893 is an aftermarket job - since IIRC Marlin didn't start until ca. 1956 - well after the demise of that model.

not factory, looks about right for a 1piece weaver base. The only 93 receivers i've seen drilled were for the hepburn they did'nt have marlin safety on them.

I have 2 with "Marlin Safety" on them that were tapped for a Hepburn. The script is towards the front of the receiver, so the taps on those are factory.
The reason I was asking on this one is because it's a deluxe - didn't know if strange tap requests were available on special order.

All Marlin 1893s were marked "Marlin Safety". In 1903 the "Marlin Safety" was moved forward to allow for 2 screws to attach a Hepburn sight.

Here's my weak photo of a 1908 1893 Receiver factory D&T for the Hepburn sight.

They might have done it at the factory on older guns if you sent it back, much like they'll do the reciever sight side holes now. But it definately isn't original I have one D&T for the Hep sight I put an aftermarket sight on. Its a nice setup.
