Win 94 rear sight intechangability?

Post by awp101 »

Will the rear sight assembly on a 20" carbine be correctly regulated for the same caliber only in a 24" Legacy?

A .44M 24" 94AE Legacy followed me home today (pics tomorrow or Friday  ). It's been scoped and the rear sight is missing BUT I have a 20" .44M 94AE "regular version" on hold to pick up this weekend. The 20" has it's rear sight assembly in place and I want to transfer the scope to the carbine and keep irons (or a Skinner) on the Legacy.

Will it work correctly? :?

Thanks!

From what I've seen, they use the same riser on all of the same caliber models regardless of barrel length. Which makes sense really since the ballistics aren't really that different.

Good hog loads (for eatin' hogs) are no stretch. We used the Remington factory 240 gr. SJHP load on CA hogs on FT Hunter-Liggett in the early '70s. Of course hogs are tougher now so get the Hornady 240 gr. XTP and load it over a top charge (for your gun) of H110/W296. IFF you demand the ultimate penetration, the 300 gr. Hornady XTP over H110/W296 will do the same.
Sincerely,

Hobie

Maybe I should ask 86er if his deer and hogs got the upgraded body armor... :?

Actually I grabbed a box of Win White Box 240g JSP, Grizzly 300g WFNGC in .44M and a box of Grizzly 260g WFNGC .44 Special for the range trip tomorrow. If any are accurate in this Legacy, does anyone see an issue if the range is kept to 100-125yds (assuming I do my part  )?

BTW, this is my first .44M of any flavor.

The sight is the same as the blades are screw adjustable on the shank in addition to the steps. You put it onn the closest step and fine adjust with the screws on the front of the blade. Loosen them and slide the blade up to desired POI.

awp101,

I know your question has been answered, but I thought I'd elaborate a bit on what KCSO said.

The rear sights on every post 64 win 94 I've owned have been identical in design and function. Right up to and including my 1985 Trapper in .45 Colt. Winchester pretty much stuck with that same sight.

Follow KCSO's instruction on adjusting it and your home free.

Thanks J!

I took it and a new to me 94AE 20" carbine also in .44M to the range yesterday. Session was cut short and I forgot the camera but the 24" Legacy is a sweet shooter. I almost hate to pull the scope and stick with irons on it because I do SOOO much better with glass.

How do 300 grain bullets perform?

I was going to say stick with 240-250 grain bullets. Hornady XTP's are outstanding game bullets as are Speer Gold Dots - and both tend to be very accurate. These will expand and penetrate well but not nearly as deeply as hard cast bullets.

The 44 Mag is a potent round for deer/hogs out to 125 with full power loads. With hardcast, semiwadcutter or wide flat nosed bullets, it will end to end an elk - .429" hole all the way through.

Are you handloading?

Don't know about the 300 grainers yet, ran out of time. Shot up the box of Win White box between them and just had enough time to put 5 rounds of the .44S though the Legacy.

As long as I kept the rifle properly shouldered the recoil was rather pleasant. I did lose focus a couple of times and got bit near the collarbone.
