Getting Ready to Mess With the 480 Achilles Some More

Post by JimT »

A local friend is learning to powder coat cast bullets. He asked if I had some he could practice on so I gave him a handful of the 290 gr. Bittner Flat Nose Heel bullet. He gave them back to me looking like this:

I loaded a box of them this morning, using 12 gr. 2400 powder charge. This load averages 870 fps is pretty accurate. It will be interesting to see how they do. I am hoping to hit the range early next week.

Great! I hope to put some more fingerprints on it. :D That pistola has a certain balance to it, unlike similar sized sixshooters. Have you ever weighed it?

No. It's a standard weight Colt copy .. just the 8" heavy barrel gives it a different feel. Apart from the barrel it may be a few ounces lighter due to material removed from the cylinder when it was opened up to .475" ... but it would not be much.

I think the loads we were shooting in Arkansas were with a mild charge of Unique? I'm actually looking forward to see what 2400 will do in this cartridge.

I know its a bit messy at times, but I actually like the idea of the exposed lubrication. I would probably carry extra rounds in a Civil War cap pouch on my belt to keep the dirt and grime off of them.

Fir a second I thought it was a dish of Okra.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

I just loaded a box with 12.0 gr. 2400. It is an accurate load in this gun. Averages 870 fps. 13 gr. 2400 is accurate also and does 950 fps. I have also used WC820 (military surplus H110) .. 16.0 gr. does 955 fps average and is also an accurate load.

If you put a bit of Lee Liquid Alox over lubed bullets (keeping it thin) they are not messy. You could probably use Elmers Glue also.

It does THUMP things pretty hard. I have only shot a couple living breathing critters with it, but they seemed to know they were hit. :D
